Yeah, we've all heard the general consensus about photorealistic CGI amongst animation enthusiasts. But hey - CGI doesn't have to be photorealistic, and I don't mean Madagascar.

One example is Pocoyo (http://images.google.co.uk/images?client=firefox-a&rls=org.mozilla%3Aen-US%3Aofficial_s&q=pocoyo&hl=en&btnG=Search+Images), a British series that premiered this year. It's a preschool show, so the plots aren't exactly enthralling, but the design is great. It takes a very minimalist approach - the background is almost etirely white, broken only by the occasional cloud or tree and the characters' shadows - and Pocoyo himself has some adorable character animation, bouncing about in quick darts with his eyes morphing into upside-down Us (a la anime) or apostraphes (a la Peanuts).

So, who else would you say is taking a less beaten path when it coems to CGI?

This one definitely pops to mind... Luovo (http://www.luovo.com)... I came across it a few years ago. The effect is mostly achieved with CG filters but I think it shows possibilities.

There's also a kids show... whose name I have forgotten apart from it beginning with 'P'... where all the characters are made up of cubes... hehe, the theme song goes something like "All the world is square! It's great to be square!" I don't know if it's a successful use of design, but I did remember it at least...

I just said something I wish to un-say.

God, now it looks like the retraction is about something other than what I was actually being tactless about. It wasn't. Maybe I should just be a jerk. It might actually be less damaging.

hehe, well considering I have no idea what you're talking about, I think you're pretty safe...

Well what I actually said was I thought that show looked about as attractive as Dick Cheney with a bucket of poutine upset over his head.

Actually my award for poorest design for an animated series goes to Girl Stuff, Boy Stuff (http://www.ytv.com/programming/shows/girlstuff_boystuff/main.asp)... there's something about the diamond-shaped eyes and their colour palette that just makes the show look awful...

Ick. What horrible character design. Neither show looks really attractive, but I think I'd take Pocoyo over girl stuff boy stuff any day. :/

Pecola (http://epguides.com/Pecola/)!... that's what it was called.
