View Full Version : (not Sonic the) Hedgehog in the Fog makes #1

A soviet Russian film hits #1 in 'short films'. Good God! And a British film in 'Holiday Specials'. Hedgehog Will probably be overtaken by Wallace and Gromit again, since more people have seen the latter and it's in English, but for the record, 'Hedgehog in the Fog' deserves its new position (not that there's anything wrong with W&G, but it's like comparing an absolute classic with a masterpiece)

Now someone other than me needs to review 'Tale of Tales', because IMO that's probably even better.

It's been in first place for a while, just tied with Wrong Trousers...

(Snowman and Rudolph are tied too)

Secret of NIMH was also tied with Bambi for a fair while, but Bambi always showed up as #1 and NIMH #2. I can't remember the criteria for what appears in the 'best' slot. Maybe number of reviews.

Also (and I know I've said this before; I can't remember whether publically or not) - you can't have a top 5 with 6 films in it. If 2 films are tied for, say position 2, then the next ranking should be 4, not 3.

Not that I care that much, because I rather like the idea of extending the top 5 to more than 5. Ten seems too much, but we're conditoned to think in terms of counting on our fingers. Maybe a top 8? What's wrong with 8? Used to be my favourite number.

(I'm not sure I have a favourite number now, but I've always disliked 3, for some reason)

In other news...

Has anyone here besides Inkwolf and Magnus seen Mirrormask? If that gets another review we'll finally have a top 5 PLA.

No, but I could make up a review if you like.

(what I hate about this, is I don't use smiley's much because I have the proverbial dry sense of humour, and I know that without them someone is going to think I'm being serious, so I have to say I'm not serious, which makes it not funny. Are you happy now, you smiley-crazed people?)

(I suppose I should have put one there, too)

(and there)

If the film has the exact same star value and the exact same number of reviews it is a tie and it should show up so... in fact it did until the programmer last year changed my code... I just haven't had a chance to dig in and figure out how to change it back again.

The system does register ties if it isn't #1...

(it's on my list... I just need to get through the two bloody client sites I was supposed to be doing last week when I was tearing my hair out over Keyframe... I'm bald now. It's very sad.)

EDIT: alright... fixed now. still procrastinating on client work... :P

I will, somewhat guiltily, admit that I originally choose 'Top 5' as a reference to one of my all-time favourite films, "High Fidelity"... which is not animated but still excellent. :D

I've been meaning to see it for ages. I'll definitely go out and rent it if it'll give us that PLA list.

Just realised something. Looney Tunes BIA has 2.5 stars, so if we get a PLA top 5 it'll be on both lists.

I seem to remember you coding it so that a film had to get 2 stars or under to make the bottom 5... guess that must have reverted somewhere along the line

Gargh... yes and no. :irked:
The code still has the split point in it, but it has the split at 2.5 as opposed to 2--so Looney Tunes wouldn't have appeared in the Best 5 and Worst 5 simultaneously... I can change it to 2, (which is what it is in the admin Top 5 checker), but I just realized we're going to lose the Worst 5 lists for TV and PLA if I do. Can we live with that?

Personally I don't think a film with 2.5 stars can be said to be among the "worst" since it did make it to 2.5 stars... but I don't know...

I hunted down Hedgehog just because of the wonderful reviews, and I wasn't disappointed. :)

I didn't even think of Mirrormask as PLA when I watched it...Jim Henson Creature Workshop still says 'puppets' to me. But when the discussion was going on about what is part-animation CGI and what's just special-effects CGI, I suddenly realized this was a perfect addition to the PLA list. Nobody can accuse Mirrormask of trying to disguise itself as reality. :D
