Okay, we've all read about the CGI bubble bursting this year. So what abotu next year? From Jerry Beck's site:
344. TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES (3/30/07) Warner Bros.. (computer animation) D: Kevin Munroe.
345. MEET THE ROBINSONS (3/30/07) Disney. (computer animation) D: Steve Anderson.
346. FOODFIGHT (4/ /07) Lion's Gate. (computer animation) D: Larry Kasanoff.
347. SHREK THE THIRD (5/18/07) Dreamworks. (computer animation) D: Raman Hui, Chris Miller.
348. SURF'S UP (6/8/07) Columbia. (computer animation) D: Ash Brannon, Chris Buck. In the style of a mockumentary, this feature reveals that surfing was actually invented by penguins!
349. RATATOUILLE (6/29/07) Pixar-Disney. (computer animation) D: Brad Bird.
350. THE SIMPSONS MOVIE (7/27/07) 20th Century-Fox. D: David Silverman.
351. PERSEPOLIS ( / /07) Sony Pictures Classics. D: Vincent Paronnaud, Marjane Satrapi. Poignant coming-of-age story of a precocious and outspoken young Iranian girl that begins during the Islamic Revolution. 2-D in black & white.
352. BEE MOVIE (11/2/07) Dreamworks/Paramount. (computer animation) D: Steve Hickner, Simon J. Smith.
353. CORALINE ( / /07) Laika Entertainment/Focus Features. (stop-motion animation) D: Henry Selick, Mike Cachuela.
Okay... let's take a closer look.
Three funny animal films (Ratatouille, Bee Movie and Surf's Up), and two of them are made by Pixar and Dreamworks, who no-one thought would go away soon. 2006 has, what, seven?
The other CGI movies are an odd mix. Meet the Robinsons has no anthropomorphs, just human characters in a fantasy setting - from the same school as The Incredibles, in other words. Shrek 3 is self explanatory, Food Fight probably won't go anywhere, and TMNT is a TV show tie-in. It all suggests that CGI movies are slowly but surely branching out into other directions.
Then there's a stop-motion movie and two 2D movies... yup, looks more promising than this year, all in all.
