View Full Version : Dixie/Vixy

First of all, I assume from the highlight image that 'Fox and the Hound 2' is a midquel, as Tod was full grown at the end of the original. So I assume the 'Dixie' mentioned isn't the same as 'Vixy' in the original, as they obviously hadn't met before when they meet in F&TH. In fact Tod acts like he's never met a female fox before at all, but I suppose you could put that down to his never having met one as an adult.
But I'm a bit confused still, though I'll admit I haven't watched the original for a while - but how does Tod get to be with Copper and Chief in this film, and involved in some circus sideshow, at an age, judging by the image, when he would have been living with Widow Tweed - when, from memory, he was adopted by Widow Tweed in the first movie almost as soon as he was orphaned, and met Vixy soon after she let him go?
So could this presumed timeline work, is some creative mangling going to be nescessary, or are there gaps in the timeline I'm forgetting?

I think Dixie is a dog... probably the female dog who is on the DVD cover.
As to the rest... no idea.

Well, it looks as if Dixie is a dog, not a fox, which solvs one problem.
But if it's so odd for a fox and houd to be friends,(and the kids never realized it till Copper comes back from hunting-dog training) I find it hard to understand how Tod manages to rub noses withe all them singin' dawgs.
And while it's potentially possible for young Tod and Copper to have gotten involved with county-fair singers, I agree that it doesn't feel true to the original setting. The characters lived on remote farms, not in a small town where a fair might set up.
I find it sort of sad that Disney, whose cartoons used to be littered with barnyard animals and country scenes, couldn't find a more rural adventure for Tod and Copper...like a feud with a pesky skunk, say. Or someone trying to get Widow Tweed's farm for a housing development. :p Disney can't think rural anymore, they only seem able to do urban and show-biz plots.
But I'll save any major sneering till I've actually een it.

I must say that overall, so far, in the pantheon of their DTV's, this is looking like one of their clangers. Apart from the story premise seeming really uninteresting, and as Inkwolf observed, innappropriate, the artwork I've seen in the few screenshots I've seen is garish and horrid. e.g.

Bright mauve sky, bright mauve water, astroturf, and air-brushed bushes. I hope these aren't actual captures from the finished film.

I'm preparing my tomatoes. I want them to re-release the original. Not this monstrosity.

I just realized we were missing the crew credits on the profile... the director's previous credits included Little Mermaid II and 101 Dalmations II... although the writer's previous credits were Balto and Shrek...
anyways, I'll reserve judgement until I've seen it...

And what's the deal of not releasing a Platinum edition of Little Mermaid? The release that's coming out is another of these 2-Disc "Special Editions". I want the behind-the-scenes story not kiddie activities...
I'm still trying to get my hands on the original collector's edition of Tarzan since they did the exact same thing last year... except it was only 1-disc... :irked:

Mixed bag. I gather Mermaid II is regarded as one of Disney's DTV stinkers, but I thought 'Dalmatians II' was quite fair, and maybe the most unfairly ignored sequels in their catalogue.
although the writer's previous credits were Balto and Shrek...
Hard to make much of that, as both films had multiple writers, though two of Balto's 4 writers were also on 'Cat's Don't Dance' (not this guy though).
I think the thing is, everything has to work. If the writing, animation, direction, art direction, voice acting, overall concept or any important facet is horribly wrong, the whole thing usually seems horribly wrong.

Just a tip: unless there is no other choice, avoid ebay . I wouldn't be so stringent about this, except for animated DVDs. Children tend to use them as chew toys or frisbees. I made the mistake of buying the 2 disc edition of Bambi on ebay, and it wouldn't even play (and then the woman carped on and would only maybe give me a partial refund, no promises, return it first, etc)
Even stores send you the odd wonky disc, but at least you can usually get your money back from them. An amazon store might have some protection. Dunno; I've never dealt with them because you can't aggregate the postage across items so to Australia it ends up costing me more in postage than the item cost.

Nice image :eyebrow: I don't know another direct-to-vid to try to avoid buying, I got Bambi 2 to watch at some point; at least after I finished writing up current crop of reviews etc.
I want them to re-release the original.
Well you got you wish, the remastered 25th Anniversary Edition DVD is due for release in October (but unfortunately it's a single disc release with little in the way of extras). Oh and Dungeons & Dragons is due out for the US in November (I've had the PAL version since it came out two years ago ).
And what's the deal of not releasing a Platinum edition of Little Mermaid? The release that's coming out is another of these 2-Disc "Special Editions". I want the behind-the-scenes story not kiddie activities...
Here's a strange thing in the UK, there is never any "Platinum Editions" of any Disney film, yet the Special Editions usually turn out to be the same discs as the US's Platinums.

Yeah I heard about that quick swap, shame cause it was a great edition, although I wish the UK version (we do get the Collector's Editions here) had the audio commentary the original US release had.
