Scenes showing characters smoking to be banned (http://news.scotsman.com/index.cfm?id=1232382006) from Tom and Jerry and HB cartoons on TV in UK.

This item was on the news tonight in Australia, along with footage of cartoons showing characters blowing each other up, or beating each other senseless, where an incidental character happened to have a cigar in their hand.

Don't know if this will affect DVD releases. Might have to go for region 1 releases. One of the affected shorts is an Oscar-winner.

I was going to write about this, if not for the fact that my computer been down.

One complaint is all that sparked this, one: a single individual. It seems that the madness has spread, only this time it’s not Warner/Turner doing the censoring (indeed Boomerang is trying to do the least they can get away with).

As far as DVD releases go, almost all the Tom and Jerrys' theatricals were chronologically released on DVD and VHS in the UK years ago. Out of the 158 Tom and Jerry shorts released, 6 had edits on Region 2 DVD but not VHS.

The fact that you can get almost all the Tom and Jerry unedited on one format (VHS/DVD) or another in the UK seems to be a point which Ofcom seems to be totally oblivious to.

I can't figure out why everyone is so willing to kowtow to whiners. One person writes in and says 'I'm such an ineffectual parent I can't teach my kid about smoking', and major corporations reply 'Oh! We must alter history to enable you to be a failure as a parent!' It's all nuts.

At least it's just the smoking. If they edited the violence out of Tom & Jerry, there would be no cartoon left...

Actually that might be pretty funny to see.
