I love that there's history behind this piece... I suppose because it's somewhat amazing to me that the web can have "history" at this point.
Monkeyfunk, I was reading the Wiki article (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shii%27s_Song) you included in the links and it says:
Shii-chan is an Shift_JIS art (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shift_JIS_art) cat, portrayed as living in a cardboard box. She is considered one of the mascots of 2channel (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2channel), the largest Internet forum (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Internet_forum) in Japan, but actually predates that BBS. She is thought to have originated in Ayashii World (Strange World), an old web-based bulletin board system (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bulletin_board_system) in Japan around 1999 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1999).
Would it be alright if I set the profile release date as 1999 and then we keep the note in the 'Of Interest' saying we don't know the exact release date but can only guess that it's after 1999...?
The system isn't really designed to handle 'no release date' and I'm certain it's going to do strange things to some of the listings.

Err... Athena, I think you mean Inkwolf.

Yeah, go for it! I have no idea how to find the release date for web animation...I plan to add Neil Cicierga's Potter Puppet Pals, too, and again have no clue about the dates involved...not that I've really looked yet.

There's practically a cult among Harry Potter fans for these shorts.
----------
EDIT: Ummm, can i say "duh" now? It just occurred to me to check the creation date for the file...my Japanese-version SWF of Shii's Song says it was created on July 8, 2002. That's not absolute proof, of course, but it's something.

Would it be possible for you to implement some way of adding "c." (circa) to the start of a release date? There are some silent-era animations with similar problems...

Ack- sorry! This is why site maintenance should not be done before I'm awake... :o

I'll see about adding a checkbox and a field to the database...
I think I'm going to need to streamline the profile-add process at some point in the near future, it's getting a little cluttered. Particularly if I'm going to be implementing the multi animation-type per profile business we talked about before.

BTW, Athena, I see you had to edit my merchandise link on R.O.D., and I can't get the merch thingy to appear at all on Potter Puppet Pals. (They sell T-shirts.) I'm not sure why I'm having problems with it...

Actually I only edited it for Potter Puppet Pals because it wasn't displaying properly... didn't touch R.O.D. though.
hmm... we don't have a 't-shirt' type category... you may want to just add it to the Of Interest or the Links.

Okay, I've hit a similar problem with Ninja: I don't know what country it comes from. The Ninjai Gang claims to come "from all over the world", but they seem to be into total anonymity (kind of appropriate, given their subject matter) so I can't even post the home countries of its principal ceators.
Right now the profile says "country of origin" followed by a blank space. Maybe it should default to "unknown" like when you don't include the studio; if not I'll go ahead and add "unknown" to the list of countries...

No, I can make it default to unknown fairly easily... just made that code edit now... the country table is used elsewhere in the system so it wouldn't be a good idea to have an 'unknown' sitting in there.

Saaay, web animation is one profile away from catching up with DTV.

I could always add some of the land before time sequels
Also I have a few other DTV and OAV I could add: The third American Tail, Sonic the Hedgehog: The Movie, Dragon Half, Felix the Cat: The Movie (I believe that it went straight to video, I can't find any evidence to the contary)
EDIT: Oh and add to that Tom and Jerry: The Magic Ring/Blast of to Mars DTVs.

There's a fourth American Tail video out, now, too. It wasn't all that bad, outside of Feivel being out of character through the whole movie.

Yeah, they showed the latter two American Tales on UK TV last week. I taped them both for my collection.
(...yeah, I collect cartoons, even the bad ones.)
