View Full Version : Top 5's for Theatrical Shorts.

Now the theatrical shorts section has a top 5 to call its own. Or rather it has two, one in the top 5 group and one in the most reviewed section.
I suppose the real questions are how long will each short stay in it current place? Is Rabbit of Seville really better than Duck Amuck? Is this short really as good as that one?
Early risers in the charts are always subject to change, and as more shorts are added, how will this list change?
BTW I've got many more profiles written up and on the way to be processed and plenty to add for the foreseeable future.

A few more reviews of non Warner Bros shorts would be good, as at the moment we just have a top 5 WB shorts list. But I suppose there's no help for that but waiting.

Agreed, it would be nice to see another company other than Warner's make the list somewhere, at the moment you'd think no-one else made theatrical shorts.
What can you do but wait and hope?
I still got to write reviews for many shorts that I've put up, but I always find something else to do instead.
I'm going to try and watch some more of that "100 Classic Cartoons" DVD this weekend, though I think I may skip pass the popeye's till later though; don't get me wrong I love the Fiescher ones, but most (not all) of the Famous one are :ppbb: AFAIC.

I've seen a couple of Famous ones which are actually good ('Me Musical Nephews' for instance), but that's not on that DVD. If you think those shorts are bad, there's some really awful stuff in there, though there are a few good ones, too.

Now we just need part live action and web animation... both categories have four qualifying entries.
PLA needs some Svankmajer. Does anyone here besides me and Loop own copies of The Flat and Alice?

I own the 2 DVD collected shorts, Alice, Conspirators of Pleasure, and Faust... I used to own the individyal shorts DVDs but sold them when I bought the double,k only to find they missed out a couple.
I've wanted to add (for instance) 'Down to the Cellar' and 'Conspirators of Pleasure', but didn't think they had enough stop-motion to qualify. Big pity.
Oh, and I will probably get Litle Otik next time I order from Amazon, whether it counts or not.
Does anyone but me own any Yuri Norstein's? I've wanted to add 'Fox and Hare' for ages, but have never found any screencaps. To my mind he has about the best batting average of any solo animator I can think of. 'Hedgehog in the Fog' is totally sublime, and 'Tale of Tales' is just impossibly good.

I've got all four of Norstein's solo short, albeit slightly dodgy taped-off-the-TV copies.
I reviewed Hedgehog a while back, it's tied for first place now
(BTW; when I said that PLA needs Svankmajer, I meant the top 5. So far the qualifying profiles are Roger Rabbit, Mary Poppins, Giant Peach and Back in Action, snd the fifth really needs to be a Svankmajer film)

Hmm, Neuoticfally Yous, This Land, There she Is, Europe and Italy and 30 Second Bunnies all have at least three reviews and over 2-star ratings, but there's no webcartoon top 5. Do profiles there need 5 reviews each?

Oops, code glitch. It was waiting for 5 reviews, but I've reset it down to three so we've now got a Top 5 list for Web Animation too.

I think adding one more review for The Flat (http://keyframeonline.com/Reviews/The_Flat/636/1/) will generate a Top 5... alternatively a positive review for Rocky and Bullwinkle (http://keyframeonline.com/Animation/The_Adventures_of_Rocky_and_Bullwinkle/608/) might work too...

And I'm planning to review Alice eventually, which will knock it up to 2 reviews. Just one more...
First, though, I'll have to review Homestar Runner. A top 5 webcartoons without Homestar is like a top 5 TV series without The Simpsons ;)

I've just added a new feature to the Admin site since you guys have been so interested in the Top 5 lists of late.
It's a kind of Top 5 list monitor that allows you to see the full list rather than just the top or bottom five... and it allows you to see what animation is on the cusp of joining the list by giving the option to set an alternate minimum number of reviews.
The whole thing should be fairly self-explanatory, but let me know if you have any questions. Please note that the thing doesn't *do* anything aside from generate hypothetical lists... but I figure that has to be easier than combing through the profiles and trying to figure out the avg star ratings.

I been thinking about this a while, but how difficult would it be to get the star ratings of each profile to appear in their correspondent place in the indexes? Maybe between the profile name and the release date.
e.g. Profile name : Star Rating : Released
Alternatively you could replace the release dates with the star ratings, the dates will of course still be in the main profile.
Visitors (both members and guests) to the site could then simply scan through the indexes to look at the ratings rather than try the laborious task of looking at each profile individually.

From a purely visual standpoint it might be a little distracting... look at your own list of reviews (http://keyframeonline.com/forum/member.php?do=allreviews&u=1073) to see what I mean... and there's also the issue of the slightly increased load time on those pages...
On the other hand, seeing a star-rating might prod someone into reviewing...
let me think about it.

You could also leave the default page as it is, but have an option which switches to an index whey're ordered by rank (with or without stars). Though this could mean that stuff near the bottom never gets looked at.

I suppose profiles with no reviews could be placed right at the top - that way more people would see them, and be encouraged to review them.

I've added 3 more Svankmajer's (one PTA, one 2D and one stop-motion) , so have at them!
