El Cid: The Legend was slated for a 2003 release.
Also, is there any news about Muhammad: The Last Prophet? It was scheduled to be released in 2002.
Have either of these films been released in their native countries? Any rumours about subbed/dubbed English releases? They both looked promising.

Muhummed was released (and it's an American movie by the by), but got a very small release and there are apparently no plans for a DVD release, probably because of the touchy subject.
For a Spanish movie is superior in many ways to most of what that country has made before. I watched the original version (in Spanish) it was OK, but I doubt that the story of El Cid Campeador was anything like it. Besides, it seemed as if Disney made the film (you won't see a drop of blood despite the great battles). Man, even the villian isn't killed. I mean, I am not a bloodthirsty psycho, but come on, unless you are a curious one you shouldn't see this film. It's just not that good.

The original novel its one of the most classic spanish poems (cantares) dunno the name in english and yes, Spain invest a lot in the movie but result in too much Disney and very little originality.
At least for me, personally never found too much that a kid could aprecciate in the original material, its dense and too mature...but The Cid its something like an anonymous hero to Spain (or at least I think so).

As a kid I loved the original 'El Cid' and even more, the movie with Sidney Poitier and someone or other... oh yeah, THE LONGSHIPS. And Ben Hur, with the magnificently silly Frank Thring. They were basically well made rubbish, but good fun, like Quo Vadis, The Silver Chalice (Paul Newman's first film), The Last Days of Pompei, and other such nonsense - especially anything with Peter Ustinov in it. I'm a big toga and sandals fan. Even Burton and Taylor. Lovely rubbish.

Are they showing Muhummed's face?
...and what happens if the film is a bomb?

From what I've heard, Muhummed is only ever shown symbolically - with fire when he's angry, etc.

I've seen both... Well, I have seen "El Cid: La Leyenda" in the cinema and I own it on DVD. It's really great animation-wise. The storytelling has a lot of problems though.
When it comes to "Muhammad"... It's really poor. And I mean POOR. Both animation- and story-wise. It is (or was) available in Turkey. Not worth watching at all. Probably everyone who tries to, falls asleep in the middle anyway ;)

Oh - Polish! What was that 80's claymation show that had a theme song that went "a-a-a, e-e-e, i-i-i, o-o-o, u-u-u"?
