So, out of all the profiles in the database, what would your personal top 5 for each vategory be?
For me at least, a top 5 should have as much variety as possible; I think the five entries should give as broad an overview of whichever ategory we're talking about, even if it means ignoring an entry for some which may be inferior, but is at least different from something else on the list.
Let's start with feature films. There's three mediums to represent: 2D, CGI and stop-motion; so if we pick one of each then we'll have two entries left over. Since 2D Disney movies are such a large presence, it'd be most fair to split 2D up into "2D Disney" and "2D non-Disney". That leaves one last space, whcih should be reserved for something really unusual.
So...
2D Disney: We can more or less whittle the candidates down to Snow White, Pinocchio, Fantasia, Bambi, The Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast, The Lion King and maybe either Cinderella or Peter Pan.
The reviews here seem to suggest I'll be the only one, but personally I'm leaning towards Pinocchio.
2D non-Disney: Well, Secret of NIMH and The Iron Giant spring to mind. But those are still a little too close to Disney, so I'll be looking outside Hollywood. There are soem good candidates from Europe - Watership Down, The Plague Dogs, Kirikou and the Sorceress, Triplets of Belleville - but I think I'll turn to Japan.
That gives us Akira, Ghost in the Shell, maybe Perfect Blue and Millenium Actress, but a Ghibli movie will probably be the best choice. Miyazaki's candidates can be whittled to Princess Mononoke and Spirited Away - I'm leanign towards the latter, sicne it's actually one of the few films I'd be happy at going in at #1 - but let's not forget that Ghibli's other directors have made a few non-fantasy movies, somethign which I probably won't get a chance to represent elsewhere in the list. And out of those movies Grave of the Firefleis wins by default, as it's the only one I've seen.
Now, CGI. In other words, a Pixar movie. Even more specifically, I think this is between Toy Story, Toy Story 2 and The Incredibles.
I'm going to have to pick Toy Story 1. Whether it's the best is debatable, but it's undeniably a trailblazer - everyone can agree on that.
Stop motion. Hmm, this is tough - there haven't been many notable ones (or many at all). So this is etween the two Burtons and the two Parks; my personal favourite of the four is Chicken Run. But Park's movies don't really depart too heavily from his shorts, which will doubtless be represented in anyone's top 5 short list.
So that leaves Nightmare Before Christmas and the Corpse Bride. I think Corpse Bride was just a teeny bit better, but still, Nightmare was - again - the trailblazer.
Finally, the maverick. Hmm... there's a few I can think of but haven't actually seen, such as Waking Life. My two personal choices would be The Adventures of Prince Achmed and Yellow Submarine. I'm leaning towards the latter.
So, in no particular order, my top 5 features would be:
Pinocchio
Grave of the Fireflies
Toy Story
The Nightmare Before Christmas
Yellow Submarine
Phew, went on for a bit there. I'll tackle the other categories later. What do you think?
