interesting... one more review for Toy Story 2 and we could see our first film to bump Bambi off the #1 spot in months...

Actually, just checking the stats now... if any of the following got one more 4 star review, they would bump Bambi...

- Toy Story
- Toy Story 2
- Pom Poko

(Pom Poko? Really??)

Don't worry. Someone will give Toy Story 2 a low rating regardless of film quality just to prevent the bump from happening.

We do it all the time here.

What makes you say that?

I've seen it done.
To beauty and the beast,
Nightmare Before Christmas.
The list goes on.

When people open their review with
"There are other movies that belong in the top five"
Or
"Sure it's great, but not as great as...!"

It kinda speaks for itself.

Besides, once a new movie hits the top five, everyone who *doesn't* like it will see it and downvote it to ensure it doesn't stay there.

Downvoting is like shit. It happens.

Perhaps... but I would also say that the process is also somewhat 'Darwinian'... the strong survive and the weak are eliminated... even a film that is 'down-voted' can be restored to the Top-5 with a enough positive reviews... or conversely, enough positive reviews can make it virtually impossible to down-vote a profile.

Keep in mind, the Top 5 is calculated to two decimal points and, in the event of a tie, the profile with the most reviews wins out. The Top 5 is inherently unstable at the moment because the entry point is only 5 reviews. Ideally I'd like it more at 10 reviews because fluctuations at that point tend to be minor... you get a profile with 3.93 stars and 10 reviews it would take nothing short than a mac truck to move it off the Top 5... 'course again, this all comes back to the need for more regular reviewers to balance the database.

And even comments such as "It's great, but not as great as"... provided the reviews aren't shot deliberately off the mark to affect the star-rating... saying something is great, but not as great as is a valid opinion... I would be the first to say that although Bambi is a great movie, I don't think it is the *greatest* movie in our database... the only reason I haven't written a review to that effect is that I haven't seen it in many, many years and want to re-watch it before I end up as the one to knock it off the top. My copy from eBay should be arriving soon though, so that review may be in the future... or not, I may re-watch it and decide it truly IS the greatest animated movie of all time.

I have no problem with anyone's opinion provided it is given honestly... in the end, if a consensus of opinion does arise from all those disjointed little votes then you know that you've got the real winner.

Yes, you're quite right. Though I also think Athena's right, in that the more reviews, the less impact it will have. 'Godfather' has been number one on imdb ever since I can remember.

I've also felt the temptation to diss some film I've felt was unreasonably over-rated. FWIW though my low rating of 'Nightmare before Xmas' was genuinely because I didn't like it much (though oddly, I did like Corpse Bride - at least the above ground bits at the start). So it happens, but we should resist the impulse to do it. Similarly, though this is just a personal opinion, I think we should think carefully before we throw out 4 star reviews. I'm not thinking of anyone in particular. Just saying it goes both ways. And people can go back and increase their rating of movies to try and prevent films they don't like getting in the top 5. Like you said, it happens. It sucks, and all I can say is, like any such thing, the bigger sample base you have, the more likely it is to be accurate.

I am not going to bother fixing the typos in this.

Incidentally I quite agree about Toy Story 2 being the best animated sequel so far. I think it's better than the original.

No idea why this post ended up in this thread. And I can't delete it. Ignore.

Pomo Poko was on four 4-star reviews, and if its fifth had also been a 4-star it would have jumped straight to first place. Athena, tell me this didn't enter your head. Only 8% of your reviews have scored 1.5 or lower. :innocent:

uhh no, that definitely wasn't that I was thinking about. It was just... bleh... :yuck:

At this point, I'm hoping the movie I saw was an extraordinarily terrible edit of the movie you guys saw... or something along those lines... that maybe that explains the discrepancy... but even without that, there was just too much about that just had me going "wtf?!"... right now I can't imagine it ever entering into my favourites list.

In that case I apologise for any insinuations. All the same, 1.5 stars.... heck. I can understanbd someone not loving it, but actually (almost) hating it? Different strokes I suppose.

oh by the time they were into the third act, I was sitting there thinking "ugh, when will this end?!" ... I was watching it with a group of friends otherwise I would've shut it off.
