Popeye will be released on DVD in 2007.

I hope they release them in some sort of logical order - i.e., the Fleischer period, the Famous Studios period, the TV shorts, the new TV shorts, etc - rather than the random hodgepodge they made of their Golden Collection (not that there's anything wrong with Vol 1. for instance, but at least half of it is by Chuck Jones from about a 5 year period, and it has nothing by Tex Avery at all, from memory)

Whatever the case, you can bet these will be heavily cherry-picked compilations, because I figure they'd need 50+ DVDs to release the whole Popeye catalog, and probably 20 just to do the Fleischer period, assuming they stick to about 80 minutes per DVD (which of course there's no earthly reason for doing, but there aren't many 180 minute cartoon compilations out there)

Or are Warner gpoing with Blu-Ray or some equivalent? I can't remember. They'd have no excuse then, as you can fit a ton more data on a disc.

In any case, it's good news - though the press release is a bit questionable in a couple of areas. For example it insinuates that public domain releases are illegal, which of course they're not. And I'm not sure that Popeye is the only major character never to have an official release.

Well there's the Columbia Fox and Crow cartoons yet to be released on DVD (or VHS for that matter), as well as the Terrytoons library and plenty of others I'm sure.

I recently joined up with the animationshow.com forums, where the animation historian Jerry Beck fequents; running the history forum; this is what he posted in relation to the Popeye DVD thread.

There WILL be extras!

And yes, I've been holding out on you. Unfortunetly my arrangement as a consultant to Warner Home Video prevents me from discussing projects I'm working on with them (I must sign a non-disclosure form). I am involved with the Popeye DVD project. I cannot say much more, except the visual quality of these cartoons will blow you away. It'll be much better than the prints seen on THE POPEYE SHOW. Every cartoon will be restored from the original negs.

What I wanna see as an extra: the old Popeye arcade game. :D You could play it with the VCR remote arrow buttons...
