The "current" season (the third book) is supposed to be the last season. Reportedly, it will have 21 episodes in this season (since "The Day of the Black Sun" counts as two episodes).

Nickelodeon has been handling Avatar very strangely this year. In past years, they used to show Avatar episodes at least once a day so we could easily catch up on past episodes that we may have missed. This year, though, they have shown each new episode only once (...even when their schedule said that they were going to repeat the new episode, it was not repeated...). And, they haven't shown any of the episodes from the previous two Books at all. I wonder if this isn't some kind of push to get greater DVD sales....

Nickelodeon has only shown up to "The Day of the Black Sun" so far for Book 3. Two additional episodes have been aired in Canada (YTV). There has been no word about when the remaining episodes will be aired. The third DVD for Book 3 is scheduled to come out in May so I assume that Nickelodeon will at least show those episodes before the DVD comes out (but, since there has been no word on when they will air, there's no guarantee that they will be shown in air before the DVD comes out).

Wikipedia is a good source of info about Avatar. Also, avatarspirit.net is a good place to go for info.

Hmmm. I thought they had bought three more seasons.

All I know so far is that there will be a fourth season (as how names go, very likely "Book Four - Wind") and it'll only serve to develop the Avatar universe a little more. This means that Aang and his friends won't be returning for another season but the series will continue with new characters and themes...

I can't find anything except vague rumors relating to a fourth season. Do you have a link that might give credence to follow-on seasons?

Okay, doing some more searching, I found an article in newsrama.com (in one of their Animated Shorts articles) where they interviewed Michael Dante DiMartino (the creator of Avatar) back in October 2007. At that time, the article stated that 3 more seasons of Avatar were coming after season 3. The article has since been updated to say that Nickelodeon has stated that this is not true.

The only Avatar works in development that have been divulged to the public are for the trilogy of live-action films. Although some people associated with the current Avatar TV series would like to have follow-on seasons (which are unlikely to be about Aang & gang), there doesn't seem to be anything definite about that.

If we're lucky, Nickelodeon will give further seasons the green light. Unfortunately, Nickelodeon makes seemingly strange decisions at times so there's I won't bother to expect to see further TV episodes of Avatar until there is definite word.

That's weird I remember the rumor of the fourth season on that interview, but now he talked about three more seasons?? I have to check that...

You were right, I double check and the interview i read (the one in IGN.com) mentioned "possible proyects" that will expand the Avatar universe... nothing about a new season.

Being the crazed Avatar freak that I am, I do have an answer to this question:

Yes, this season is the final one for Avatar (*weeps*), and from what I have heard, the new episodes (starting with the one after the two-part "Day of Black Sun") should start up in early April.

(Being the crazy person I am, I've already seen the Canadian eps that were shown over a month ago, and they are awesome.)

From April until late May, there should be new episodes, ending with the four-episode finale, "Sozin's Comet - The Final Battle" (I think that's the tentative title for now) which will complete the series.

And yes, Season Three will have 21 episodes, unlike the other two (which only had one less).

I think this will be an interesting development . . .

For those that missed the Book 3 episodes on TV, the complete Book 3 DVD collection came out yesterday in the US. I received my copy in the mail today.

Now that Avatar is over, looking back on the series as a whole and reflecting I kinda wish there had been more. The whole story just seemed kinda short.

But I'm also glad they didn't drag the show out and work it to death either.
