make your own mouse-y avatar

Most animation-related sites have pics from animated films/TV shows as avatars but I wanted something a little different for this site... which is why we have our little mice.

I've done a bunch of avatars and another user, Anya, did a bunch more a while ago... and now, for those of you feeling artistically inclined, I invite you to design your own mouse.

I've attached the default mouse image to get you started and you may decorate him/her any way you like. Give it hair. Give it clothes. Give it props. Maybe make it a characterization (ie. Harry Potter, Frankenstein) or maybe a person from history... from today... from out of your head. I know, it's still a mouse... but the fun comes from seeing where else you can take it.

Attach your finished work to a post in this thread and I'll add it to our avatar collection.


And hey, if you don't feel confident enough to take up the paintbrush yourself, I'll consider avatar requests--and maybe others here will too. :artist:

I've tried to be careful with my hearing... always carry a pair of earplugs with me in case I find myself in a loud environment, keep the sound volume on music to something reasonable, never use those stuff-it-in-your-ear style headphones... 1 in 3 people with my condition lose their hearing by the time their 30. I'll be 29 this year and thankfully there seems to be no sign of hearing loss at the moment.

Still, I listen to my iPod at work everyday using these headphones (http://www.futureshop.ca/catalog/proddetail.asp?logon=&langid=EN&sku_id=0665000FS10033050&catid=11174)... music has just become too essential to coding--helps me focus and makes the day go faster.

I've never seen 101 Dalmatians II, having almost given up on Disney's DTV sequels, but after a quick glance at the reviews, I might get a copy (if I can find one).

Well your avatar certainly reminds me of Lars (more the expression/attitude than the actual character), but I wouldn't want to inflict something on you which would make you ill. IMO Disney sequels have varied from utter rubbish (Atlantis: Milo's Return) to better than the original (Lion King 1.5) and everything in between. 101d2 is towards the upper end IMO and certainly one of the most unnoticed.

Actually, I've always been curious, Athena - what is that avatar of yours actually meant to be doing? I sometimes imagined it as reclining on a banama lounge, and other times as bracing itself for some particularly loathsome cartoon, or suffering a migraine while watching same.

I imagine I am way off the mark with either guess.

This is fairly close, but not quite. :)

When I was in school I did up a character pack for my little mouse, which included a whole bunch of different poses and expressions. I dubbed that one 'frazzled'... sort of fitting with this t-shirt idea which I had for the Keyframe shop (if I ever get around to it).

It's up... I actually put it in the hidden 'Staff Avatars' category since it was made just for you... that and the fact that the avatar category "Avatars by Toonboy's wife" is a little long-winded. Like my avatar, it means that no one else can use it.

This might seem like a stupid question, but how do you make those. A lot of them look really nice and I was just wondering if there is a certain program that you use.

Any program that allows you to paint/draw onto an image can be used. I used Corel PhotoPaint to do my GrafSpee avatar (as well as the IncrediMouse) -- it isn't a great program but it is relatively inexpensive. A lot of people use PhotoShop or Paint Shop Pro or Painter.

The system doesn't automatically add them when they are posted here. I have to come in later to manually add them. The time it takes for them to go online can be anywhere from a few hours or a day, depending on whether I'm sitting at the computer when they come in and how busy I happen to be at that moment.

We don't exactly have a huge staff here... it's just me and the three other volunteer editors.

The theme is Chihiro, who is my favorite character from my favorite movie! :) I slaved over this for about 2 hours. I just kept changing everything and the hair was so...HARD!! Hope it doesn't suck too much. It kindof looks like a mutated human with huge ears... :lol: I will be making more!

Thanks. I've been using that program for several years now, so I know some tricks.

By the way, I use two programs in making my avatars: Photoshop and ProMotion. and I use ProMotion the most. It costs about 45 dollars (U.S.), and it's a basic 2d program, but certainly better than Paint.:yuck:

All my avatars have somewhat hard edges and a little lack of finesse. It's because I only have Paint to work with, so it doesn't anti-alias your lines, etc. Anyway, I try to be as neat and clean as possible when I'm editing or drawing (on the mouse), and I keep a beady eye on all my pixels. :lol:
