Looks like they're planning to make a CGI movie based on the videogame.

I suppose this could have been posted as news, but doesn't seem worthy of bumping Your Friend, The Rat off the top. :D

I would love to be able to look forward to this, but it'll probably won’t surprise you that I’m stll looking forward to seeing the new ‘Umbrella Chronicles’ game more than this film, unless you hadn’t pegged me down as a games player.

...based on a original story away from its live action and games series.

I'm worried about the company saying this sort of thing, I mean you just have to look at what a mess Final Fantasy: Spirits Within was when Squaresoft used an ‘original’ story, characters, etc. Of course all twelve of the Final Fantasy games all had their own characters and setting, etc, so that might be a bad example. Ultimately FF:SW’s biggest killer is that it was a film that had a plot structure straight out of a game, without the interactivity, not a way to attract a general audience. At least the consensus about Advent Children is that it's merely mediocre rather than one of the worst films on keyframe.

I think that some of this difference between the two may also, in part at least, be down to familiarity with the characters from 7 and a certain fondness to them. I kind of think that when it comes to games series being made into films (or books, etc), most people tend to want to see at least some of characters that they’ll recognise portrayed on screen. Though I wonder how a new story and characters will go well with fans and/or general audiences, though the later will probably go see it for its graphics, although FF:SW proved that a bad story will keep them from coming back, despite how detailed everything looks.

Of course what works in one medium may not work in another. Mind you, saying that the majority of games out there don’t really have much in the way of plot to begin with, though it is slowly getting better, if a long way of from the best of film (well Point ‘N’ Click games had their moments of comic brilliance, though they’ve since disappeared).

However I can’t really think of any popular games that have been transferred over to film – or anime for that matter – that have been anything remotely close to excellent. Live-action adaptations of popular games have been mostly abominable, especially that Mario Bros. one. Actually yeah, have there been any decent live-action films based on computer games?

As far as animated game adaptations go though, it's been better: yet I’ll admit I’ve seen far more TV series then movies, mostly because more series have been made anyway.

In terms of TV, the last two I saw were Sonic X, which was merely okay (the Japanese original is better than 4kids’ dub) and Bomberman Jetterz is quite good from what I’ve seen of it, though that one is unlikely to be released outside of Japan. SonicSatAM is unlikely to lose it crown as one of the best adaptations of a videogame anytime soon (though from what little I remember the animated version Sam & Max: Freelance Police was just as brilliantly insane as the game).

I will wait until I see a trailer before I make an opinion on this.
