...and it's going to be directed by the guy who made 50% Grey. (http://keyframeonline.com/Animation/Fifty_Percent_Grey/230/)

I really liked Akira (...I need to get around to review it one of these days...). However, I'm not sure that I see the point in doing a live-action version of the movie. The technology should be able to handle it ok but I don't see what purpose it serves, except possibly to show how the original may be somewhat dated.

What's the purpose of doing this in live action again? 0_o

Well, there's been a live action version of Underdog, so I see no reason why Akira should be safe...

Same reason as doing Beowulf as CG... just because we can.

I'm starting to get afraid about this anime-to-live-action trend, let's hope we don't get a bunch of cheesy bad movies for the next couple of years (c'mon, Voltron!!).
Although, I'm really excited about the Astroboy CGI movie, being the same team of TNMT looks promising.

Ironically, if the live action version is going to be in any way faithful to the original, it is going to have to employ CGI during the 30 minute 'things going up in the air' climax.
Sorry, but when I first watched Akira, I thought "and that's it?"

Considering that even Kanye West is using the movie (with all the bad CGI involved) it's logical that this is going to be the final result...
