fabulous films (http://www.fabulousfilms.co.uk), a UK DVD distributor who recently released season 1 of The Raccoons over here has put up on its homepage - and on flyers in their products - that it will be releasing The Mysterious Cities of Gold to region 2 (PAL) DVD soon.

There is not a lot as to what the DVD will have on it at the site, in fact there's no information on the set at all, just an e-mail notification and a suggestion box.

UPDATE: The USA will get it next February, according to tvshowsondvd.com (http://www.tvshowsondvd.com/news/Mysterious-Cities-Gold-DVD-Rights-Acquired/8176).

This is awesome news. Especially for people who want to check out for the first time what makes it such an awesome cartoon. And it's unedited! This is important. Now hopefully the French will let us have Spartakus and the Sun Beneath the Sea. >.>

Bic and Bac! I hope it's as good as it seemed during the impoverished early to mid 80's.

It is. I still have the fan made tapes by Tim Skutt, and the show still holds power over me as it did when I was a child. Tim Skutt apparently was even consulted for certain things for the DVD set. Not sure how well it'll sell in today's generation. It's certainly not a brand name like "Voltron" or "Transformers"(heaven forbid). And today's kids are too used to their animes being flashy and super polished, and Mysterious Cities of Gold's animation is decidedly dated. But it also doesn't have modern anime's insistence on everything being complicated and meaty. It's all about the characterization. I'll probably see a couple people accuse the show of being a "historical" type thing just to rip on the sci fi elements when they appear(like the type of people who were confused about the wire flying in Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon).

Now I wait for the other two most important shows of the 80s. Spartakus and the Sun Beneath the Sea and Ulysses 31. Well. Around the World in 80 Days wouldn't hurt as well.

Spartakus and the Sun Beneath the Sea.

Oh, bum, that's what I meant to say in the first place when I said 'Bic and Bac'. But it's not anime anyway; it's franco-god knows what.

(I still have one of the graphic novels. I gave the other one to my stepdaughter. Sort of.)

The French can make some fine cartoons. When I was in Paris, I saw one on the hotel tv that looked interesting even though I couldn't understand it. Some kind of family drama type thing.

It would appear that the US release date has been not so much put back as almost non-existent, I sure this will greatly annoy those who hoped that the series had made its original release date.

On a related topic, Fabulous Films have apparently picked up the rights to Spartakus and the Sun Beneath the Sea (http://www.keyframeonline.com/Animation/Spartakus_and_the_Sun_Beneath_the_Sea/467/) as they've listed it under "coming soon" on their UK site.
