Oh, hang on - you've stuck in two TV series. I didn't know you could do that. Or I might have included... errr... I don't know that I would actually have included any, but still...
Five I'd like to see:
Grave of the Fireflies
Just see it. How hard can it be. I promise you, you'll be gobsmacked - unless you're one of these people who think it's depressing. It's not depressing: it's beautiful. The only Ghiblis that rival it in that dept are 'Only Yesterday' and 'Whisper of the Heart' (maybe the best of the lot)
Balto (I saw it, I just don't remember any of it! Honest! *cowers*)
and so you should cower! I have absolutely, literally seen grown men weep at this movie on three occaisions, and I've only seen it with other people three times. But it was a good weeping. You know. Not like Bambi's mother sort of weeping.
Metropolis
Interesting, but didn;'t work for me.
Tokyo Godfathers
Very good, but not great.
Dragonlance: Dragons of Autumn Twilight (good call, J-Kitty)
I don't think I would watch a film with a name like that. Maybe my turn to cringe.

Oh, hang on - you've stuck in two TV series. I didn't know you could do that.
Meh...I didn't know I could...NOT do that. I'm sure this is all for curiosity's sake anyway, but if I did have to replace them with movies, they'd be the Bebop Movie (go figure) and then something from the other five.
(Grave of the Fireflies) Just see it.
I've heard nothing but great things about it, and I've certainly never been one to turn down a movie just because it might be a tear-jerker or whatever the case is...and you're right, I think I'll just stop stalling and go rent / buy it. However I'm frustrated...despite my recent efforts to build my collection of Ghiblis, you've single-handedly named two in a row that I've never even heard of!
(Balto) and so you should cower! I have absolutely, literally seen grown men weep at this movie on three occaisions, and I've only seen it with other people three times. But it was a good weeping. You know. Not like Bambi's mother sort of weeping.
The time I did see it I do remember my friend trying to hide a tear or two, by the end of it. I may have been joining him. And actually I'll admit I've been guilty of the same thing with Bambi, although if I watched it again these days I wonder if I would cry more for the traumatised children who see it for the first time. Not to suggest that it isn't a quality movie, of course.
(Metropolis) Interesting, but didn;'t work for me.
Hmmm...I had a similar reaction to his newer work, Steamboy. Still, think I'll check it out.
(Dragonlance: Dragons of Autumn Twilight) I don't think I would watch a film with a name like that. Maybe my turn to cringe.
Under normal circumstances I'd agree with you, and I do feel a little doubtful about how they'll pull this off, but mostly I want to see it for the sake of nostalgia. I used to enjoy reading the old Dragonlance Chronicles when I was younger (one book of which was called, of course, "Dragons of Autumn Twilight"), and at the very least it will be fun to see familiar characters personified on the screen.

Mongol cats with five legs put hot salami on the rooves of their Japanese enemies, then forget all about it when the weather turns nasty.
That's my favourite anime series which never was.

The Wikipedia entry for Studio Ghibli is a good place to look at see what their films & other work are. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Studio_Ghibli)
Unfortunately, "Only Yesterday" , "I Can Hear the Sea" and "Tales of Earthsea" are not available on DVD in the US. DVDs for "Only Yesterday" and "I Can Hear the Sea" (along with the video "On Your Mark") can be purchased on eBay (non-dubbed with English subtitles).
