View Full Version : Disneys Re-releases . . . too much?

I've noticed that Disney is re-releasing many of their original films and DTV sequels on "Special Edition" DVDs.

Such as:
- Fox and the Hound (probably due to the sequel coming out this year)
- Lady and the Tramp 2 (the preview for this will be included on the Lady and the Tramp SE DVD - info thanks to DVDToons Forums)

and probably others to come in the near future.

Don't you think this is going too far? I mean, I'd like to see a SE of TLK2 with the deleted scenes (which were surprisingly absent from its most recent release), but I'm not so sure about the other films that Disney has out right now . . .

By the way things are going, Bambi 2 will be back out on a SE DVD in about a few years. ^__^

Too much? Not enough! They should stop locking away certain movies for a decade and just keep rereleasing movies every few years.

I'm getting that Fox and the Hound Special Edition. Hopefully it'll atone for that atrocity called the Gold Collection.

Can you tell me what you know about it? Where I can find some information?

With my luck it probably won't sell well, but that doesn't concern me. I'm getting it.

Just wait til blue laser discs fully integrate the media market... then everyone will have to turn in their Platinum Edition DVDs for the Ultra-Super Whopper Blue Laser Edition. ;)

And the technology will be so advanced, the disk will subliminally beam commercials into our brains so that we won't have to sit through them at the beginning of the movie. XD

I don't know much, but I heard it was mentioned on a Disney DVD website of some sort . . . . My best guess is that it'll probably be chock full o' goodies (deleted scenes, behind the making of F&H, probably a "good" sneak peek of F&H 2, and other stuff. You just hope they don't add a song to it like what they did for Beauty and the Beast, The Lion King, Alice in Wonderland, and so on.).

I'll update this when I hear more info, okay?

Just curious: what was especially awful about the Gold Collection version? I'm asking because I got it for Xmas the year before last (I still haven't watched it: I may have mentioned how seldom I watch my favourite movies). Is it an inferior transfer, or does it just lack extras, etc? I can't say I don't care about extras, but they're more like things which are nice if they're there, rather than things that I care much about when buying a DVD. I certainly wouldn't buy a 2 DVD version of something if the second DVD was filled with production drawings and executive producers rambling on about whatever.

OTOH an inferior transfer/print is a much bigger deal to me. All I want is for a film that looks good. If it has extra stuff thrown in, that's cool.

Definitely.
I tried to replace my aging VHS copy of "The Secret of NIMH" last year with a new DVD version... only to discover that although the DVD image is sharp, everything is *way* too pink... my crappy VHS copy looked better.

I could count the number of artifacts on the screen in the first few minutes of the film and run out of fingers and toes.

The cover art is actually decent, especially when compared with how cover arts have been looking lately.

But I guess I should point out that I only watch my movies in widescreen. I think The Fox and the Hound is one of the few Disney classics that got a pan and scan treatment.

...I only watch my movies in widescreen.

Erm, what about movies that were originally made in 4:3? Which was once cinema standard.

I think The Fox and the Hound is one of the few Disney classics that got a pan and scan treatment.

Lady and the Tramp was released here in the UK (can't speak for elsewhere) at 1.33:1 pan and scan, despite the fact that it was Disney's first Cinemascope (2.55:1) film.

Anywho, I just got the Lady and the Tramp SE DVD (is watching it as we speak), and I got the dish on some new SE releases.

- The Little Mermaid (October 3, 2006)
- Dumbo (sometime this year)
- Lady and the Tramp 2: Scamp's Adventure (Fall 2006)

That's all I've gotten so far. When I find out more, I'll tell ya!
