I was thinking about how to handle this VFX Hall of Fame idea and it occurred to me that, I think, the reason to have a VFX Hall of Fame--or something like it--is because the history of animation and VFX is so intertwined. I mean, we're all hear talking about "floodgates" right now because there are so many VFX films that belong in a history of animation.
Which got me thinking... rather than having a VFX Hall of Fame, which always has the danger of cracking open those floodgates, what about treating the VFX contributions as part of an Animation History Timeline? Make the Timeline be the new feature on the site?
Then you can acknowledge things like "Tron" or "Jason and the Argonauts" without actually creating a full-blown profile. Might be interesting to create a thread or an area in the forum for nominations to the timeline--why such-and-such was an important event in animation history and deserves to be included on the timeline...
Also the code for this should be relatively simple and quick to put together... certainly a lot less complicated than trying to come up with some kind of alternate profiling system for VFX films to keep them from getting too tangled in the rest of the animation databse...
Unless, of course, the real reason that people are asking for these VFX films is that they really do want them up for review purposes... in which case, we have a different kettle of fish entirely...
thoughts?
