Sci-fi film featuring faceless angels, an old man dying and a race to save a boy...

I'm trying to get a title for a sci-fi movie I watched about 20 years ago (when I was about 10).

I don't remember the plot too well as I joined it half way through but what I do remember was that the crew of a ship (which included a chisel jawed captain type, a lady and a old, bald wise man) were racing across space to help a small boy who was stranded on a far away planet.

The boy made friends with a weird quadraped creature which met a horrific end at the tentacles of a plant that was growing out of the ceiling of a cave (and this movie was on around mid-day on a Saturday afternoon as I remember!?!?!).

I also remember there was another man who was on the same planet as the boy and was racing across a desert in a car that looked like a bit spider with wheels at the end of it's legs.

There was also a scene where the crew of the ship entered a hall and were attacked by faceless, humanoid types with angel like wings.

Towards the end I remember the old man dying and that being linked to the boy in some way.

Please tell me this wasn't a dream. I'd love to track it down and watch it again.

I never saw this movie but a Google search found _Les Maitres du Temp_ -- a 1982 French film. BBC eventually aired an English-dubbed version (called _Time Masters_) in 1987. There are some images of the film at http://www.retrojunk.com/details_articles/1420/ .

If this is the film you remember, then you may have a difficult time finding an affordable copy to watch again.
