Svankmejer has said that to him, objects are more alive than people, which explains why this, one of his two Edgar Allen Poe adapations, is devoid of human characters. Instead we have stop-animated furniture and coffins.

A narrator reads from the Poe story while b/w stop-motion mixed with live action shows us gothic, mouldering buildings, chairs falling into ponds, animated coffins, and various images of decay.

To be honest, I was a bit disappointed by this 15 minute Svankmajer film. Clearly he is a surrealist. I wonder if it might help if he were to do away with following existing narratives (as he did in 'Alice') and create something completely from his unconscious - the real source material for surrealism.

Still interesting, and has some visually arresting moments, but somehow disappointing.
