An early b/w workout by Tim Burton, and an obvious dress rehearsel for 'The Nightmare Before Christmas'. What struck me quite quickly was how much Vincent reminded me of a lot of Goths I know, so whereas I was probably supposed to be amused by his macabre obsessions, I was more tickled by the scenes where his mother came in, and he'd act all gothic and depressed and she'd tell him to go out and enjoy himself. No insult intended to anyone.
I'll admit that for the most part (with the exception of odd masterpiece like 'Ed Wood', and if you haven't seen this film you MUST -alright?) Tim Burton's films just don't click with me, and whereas the art direction and everything about this early attempt reek of talent and impending fame, it's not really my cup of tea. The narration by Vincent Price, spoken in very loose rhyming couplets, was also a bit lame at times - but that's about the only bad thing I could say about it from a technical POV.
Appears on the Australian release of 'Nightmare Before Christmas', along with 'Frankenweenie', another early Burton short.
