KF Animation Editor | One year before Mysterious Cities of Gold aired, the creative forces behind that show released this other A-lister of the 80s. Don't let the space opera setting fool you. Ulysses 31 is practically a scenario by scenario retelling of Homer's The Odyssey, with some trimming here and there and planets replacing islands. The story has been made palatable for children, but it still manages to remain dark and dramatic. My memories of this show are fuzzy, but unlike Mysterious Cities of Gold and Spartakus and the Sun Beneath the Sea, I reckon Ulysses 31 had very little, if any, comic relief. The writing and animation of this show was top notch back then and probably still impresses today. And the visual design of the space ship is remarkable. If I somehow manage to figure out how to play Region 2, I'll definitely be picking up the complete series. If only somebody had the foresight to convert it to Region 1 along with the complete series of Mysterious Cities of Gold and Spartakus and the Sun Beneath the Sea. We'll never get cartoons like these three ever again. |
