*strain* It's no good. I can't think like a 12 year-old girl. On the other hand I don't suppose female reviewers of the movie will be able to think like a guy, either.
Ok, I'd watched 'Sleeping Beauty' the week before this, so to be honest I was pretty Princessed-out. As you might have gathered I'm not a huge fan of fairy-tale Princess movies at the best of times. I believe I enjoyed this one a little more than 'Sleeping Beauty', though I suspect mostly because it was less conscopicuously old-fashioned in style.
'Swan Princess', while very different from 'Sleeping Beauty' in most respects, does share one major problem with that film. It's two central characters are as boring as dirt. Another square-jawed, characterless jock for a Prince. Another beautiful, wilfull but ultimately characterless blonde as a Pricess. Honestly, she was more cute as a swan. In fact the segments with the turtle, frog, puffin and swan together were the most fun in the film (even if, once I figured out that John Cleese was voicing the frog, I kept thinking back to 'Holy Grail' and hoping he'd say "Of course I'm French! Why do you think I have this outrageous accent?")
The animation is decent for the most part, though in the scene where Odette and Derrick (or whatever his name is) kiss for the first time the animation jiggle against the background. This may be an example of the outlines changing width as noted by Athena in her review of Rich Animation's other feature film).
There are some nice scenes with pleasing backgrounds. There are a lot of really tedious songs, which are well below par even for a minor animated film. The incidental characters (other than the animal trio) vary from boring to ok, the best probably being the Prince's father, who looks and sounds well above average.
All the same though, this one seemed to me to be in the same category as a few other 90's efforts from minor players. It was ok, but there was nothing classic about it, and nothing to keep an adult interested. It's presumably aimed at young girls, and it's hard to recommend it for any other group.
The DVD copy I viewed also contained quite a lot of general dirt and imperfections which I assume must have been on the original masters. Cleaning it up digitally wouldn't have done it any harm.
