Call me a sap for giving this movie four stars, but The Powerpuff Girls is one incredibly giddy, hilarious movie. For a movie based on a tv series, this one tops them all. Most movies based on a tv series have mediocre animation and average to horrible plotting. Not only is The Powerpuff Girls Movie well written, but it also has incredibly intoxicating visuals and animation. Sure The Powerpuff Girls' animation consists of simple shapes and movement, but that's part of what makes the show and the movie so pleasing to look at. The movie also utilizes the fusion of 3D graphics and 2D animation to great effect.

But great animation isn't the only thing that separates this movie from the other cartoon-based movies. As I've said above, this movie actually has good writing. The plot is still bubblegum light, but that hardly matters. Instead of retreading familiar ground, the creators of the movie opt to tell the story of the girls' origins and how their earliest days were. Many charming, funny, and heartwarming scenes unfold during the first act of the movie. The personalities of the characters simply grab you and beg for you to dote on the good guys and despise the bad guys. Then as the movie kicks into high gear, it becomes a rollicking visual rollercoaster ride. Finally the movie goes all out with scenes that go from sad to laid back to shocking to dramatic to just plain silly. The climax with the non-stop monkey jokes is decidedly buffoonish, but it just wouldn't be The Powerpuff Girls without some silliness.

You probably need to be a fan of The Powerpuff Girls to enjoy this movie. Or at least be willing to watch cartoons that are just plain nutty but have more than that. Either way, this movie is just a hilarious, fun, and overall good time. It's a neat little package with big contents.

Edit: I've since decided that four stars maybe just a tad too much for it. But still a fun movie nonetheless.
