There's sort of a joke in my family that Shining Force III is the best incomplete game you'll ever experience. Well. Behold the SF III of animated shows. While Pirates of Dark Water certainly ended in a satisfying way, it was never meant to stop where it did. But after one season, it mysteriously vanished. Which is strange because the creators crafted the aquatic equivalent of Dune, complete with its own mythos and its own believable world. Pirates of Dark Water was full of high adventure and genuine menace. Perhaps it was this menace that got the show cancelled, as the main villain was certainly terrifying. But there were too many juicy questions left unanswered, like the origin of the titular Dark Water. In hindsight, this was probably better stuff than even Sonic the Hedgehog.
