Oh noes, who in their right minds approved the idea of making a sequel to The Land Before Time?

(because, no offense, they deserve to be fired. LOL)

Actually, I, at first, enjoyed the original film - a dark yet nearly whimsical tale of survival and friendship between five different species of dinosaurs on a journey to a safe haven - but I never got the chance to watch the first sequel of many in the LBT franchise until recently (I've seen almost all of them in their entirely, which can be hard for a twenty-something like myself to do, but I enjoyed much of it).

The Great Valley Adventure is actually a well animated story that continues the adventures of the adorable longneck Littlefoot and his friends as they wander into the Mysterious Beyond (disobeying their parents/guardians' rules, just like normal youngsters do at that age) and protect a egg, that known to them actually holds a baby Sharptooth (AKA a T-Rex)! How will the Littlefoot gang's lives ever be the same again now that a baby Sharptooth (which they lovingly named Chomper) is causing trouble?

The idea is interesting cute, and the animation is a much more pleasing than the more recent sequels in the series (it's much similar to the original - less shadows and such on the characters, just like typical 2-D animation). The new songs are awkward and childish though; however, they seem to suit the characters for their age (they're young - probably about 5 or a bit older in human age . . . if they were human), but the best part about the earlier sequels to this series is that the whimsical pieces of the original James Horner score and the notage of "If We Hold On Together" (the ending song of the original film) in several points of the beginning and ending of the films make it worth it. (I think after the 5th or 6th film in the series, the music is total crap and I barely heard any homage to the original, with exception of the characters)

This is rather weak altogether, but the message of diversity is well used. The new character of Chomper was indeed cute and cuddly, but I just like the fact that he comes back later on in the film series (the fifth movie: The Mysterious Island . . . yes, I know all of the LBT sequel titles in order; isn't that just sad?).

It's a least worth a rental for being a decent follow-up, but unless you're a fan of the series, you might not want to buy it.

I really love the first Land Before Time. It's beautiful, dark and awe-inspiring. It was a smash hit in cinemas and on video. So Universal decided to cash in on a classic by releasing 11 direct-to-video sequels.

This sequel has nothing in common with the original. Don Bluth had absolutely nothing to do with it - and I don't blame him. Firstly, there are songs. The best thing about the original was that there was no singing in it. There's none of the haunting dark atmosphere that made the original so powerful. It's now all cute kiddie songs and games. It seems the main characters have forgotten the events of the first film. It doesn't matter if Littlefoot's mother died, because 'everyone's having a good time now.' The 'Sharptooth' is transformed from an eerie and frightening villain to a cute cuddly friendly teddy bear. What's wrong Universal? Is a T-Rex too scary for toddlers? Because that is what this movie is aimed at. And also, we have a pair of incredibly weak and comical villains that do not justice to the 'Sharptooth' in the first film. The animation in the original was sharp, although not as good as Disney. But it certainly looks like Disney now when compared to the poor animation of this sequel. It looks like its jumped straight out of a Saturday morning cartoon. The only real good point here is some of James Horner's music, but even that can't save this miserable mess of a film. It can't save the other sequels either, because they're all just a re-worked formula that disgraces the original even more each time.

The original Land Before Time is a treasure for all ages. But this and all of the other sequels are watered down politically correct kiddie fluff. And I see reviewers praise them as 'good quality adventures.' Now I'd have to stop and ask if they're blind. Saying that is like trampling on the print of the original film. And yet, they make even more sequels after this one. Why, when the first sequel was a complete waste of time and money?
