Oh noes, who in their right minds approved the idea of making a sequel to The Land Before Time?
(because, no offense, they deserve to be fired. LOL)
Actually, I, at first, enjoyed the original film - a dark yet nearly whimsical tale of survival and friendship between five different species of dinosaurs on a journey to a safe haven - but I never got the chance to watch the first sequel of many in the LBT franchise until recently (I've seen almost all of them in their entirely, which can be hard for a twenty-something like myself to do, but I enjoyed much of it).
The Great Valley Adventure is actually a well animated story that continues the adventures of the adorable longneck Littlefoot and his friends as they wander into the Mysterious Beyond (disobeying their parents/guardians' rules, just like normal youngsters do at that age) and protect a egg, that known to them actually holds a baby Sharptooth (AKA a T-Rex)! How will the Littlefoot gang's lives ever be the same again now that a baby Sharptooth (which they lovingly named Chomper) is causing trouble?
The idea is interesting cute, and the animation is a much more pleasing than the more recent sequels in the series (it's much similar to the original - less shadows and such on the characters, just like typical 2-D animation). The new songs are awkward and childish though; however, they seem to suit the characters for their age (they're young - probably about 5 or a bit older in human age . . . if they were human), but the best part about the earlier sequels to this series is that the whimsical pieces of the original James Horner score and the notage of "If We Hold On Together" (the ending song of the original film) in several points of the beginning and ending of the films make it worth it. (I think after the 5th or 6th film in the series, the music is total crap and I barely heard any homage to the original, with exception of the characters)
This is rather weak altogether, but the message of diversity is well used. The new character of Chomper was indeed cute and cuddly, but I just like the fact that he comes back later on in the film series (the fifth movie: The Mysterious Island . . . yes, I know all of the LBT sequel titles in order; isn't that just sad?).
It's a least worth a rental for being a decent follow-up, but unless you're a fan of the series, you might not want to buy it.
My Rating: 3 stars
