posted: Jun 07, 2008 Rated it: | World-Class Animation Critic | After seeing about two episodes of this show, you've pretty much seen all the material they use for a whole season. This show could have had so much potential but it's basically just mindless humor with overused jokes and visual gags. I dislike the animation style immensely and how retarded 95 of the characters are. I can't recommend this show to anyone, it's not worth watching...and why I've watched more than one episode...is really beyond me. I think I was just really bored...but even then...hmmm. |

posted: May 09, 2008 Rated it: | Animated Enthusiast | I understand why everyone can hate this show, and just like Magnus pointed in his review, the main problem with The Fairly Odd Parents is that it mainly points the issues of American animation: tasteless comedy, a downright objective to underestimate the viewers (mostly kids, for the making things worse) and of course zero-to none content. I would also note another peculiar thing: that it seems (at least in these days when everything is fast-produced junk in TV) that most of the animators behind a decent show can't hold their animation concepts for more than a season. I don't hate this series and actually some years ago I like it. Now the thing is (like I pointed above), when I used to like this show, it was simply a really small segment from the Oh Yeah Cartoons!! This show was actually the Nickelodeon version of Cartoon, Cartoons!! Both shows had their moments and just like Cartoons produced such hits as Cow and Chicken or Johnny, Oh Yeah Cartoons!! Gave origin to the Fairly Odd Parents and My Life as a Teenage Robot. Interesting though, the prime concept of the "fairly odd.." was way apart of what later became: Timmy had a different design and was more childish, Cosmo was actually smart (and had a great voice!) and the Timmy's parents were similar to the ones of Cow and Chicken, you never saw their faces (just the upper part of their bodies) and the real and only villain of the show was Vicky, the nanny. How this amazing and surreal show became a pointless and unoriginal comedy series that I don’t know. But what it was certain it's that at least to some extent, the creator of the show Butch Hartman manages to give some style to the first season of The Fairly Odd Parents. The very first season had some good episodes and the characters weren't annoying like in future episodes. What happened to this show is not rare; it happens to tons of goods shows that simply are left behind by their creators. Butch Hartman obviously started to lose interest in his own creation and pass on to be a producer and later direct another series (the equally promising but failed Danny Phantom). And like I said, it not just the series, it happened to SpongeBob, Dexter laboratory and although some people say is a blasphemy, Foster for Imaginary Friends. What has happened to American animation and their promising stars? I won’t go that far; since this review has extended enough, but I'll point what Jhonen Vasquez (designer of Invader Zim) refers to as simply the consequences of animation being butchered by their own system and consumerism. Until that changes, I’ll stick to two stars.

posted: May 09, 2008 Rated it: | World-Class Animation Critic | Fairly Odd Parents is, in my opinion, a prime example of the tasteless grease that remains on a pan after all the good food has been scraped away. It is the kid-friendly comedy cartoon that defines an entire genre of recycled jokes, predictable plots, and super-simplistic animation that is, to this day, the majority of American television animation. Every character in "Fairly Odd Parents" has exactly two positions: three-quarters to the left, and three-quarters to the right. At virtually no point do any of the characters face toward or away from the "camera," face directly left or right, look up, down, around, or do ANYTHING except stand or float about in one of those two positions. You'd almost wonder if maybe there were such a thing as "expressive animation." Clearly these animators would disagree. I suspect that this is an example of an age of American "economy cartoons," in which sophisticated animation programs (which admittedly can do wonders for an animator's workload) and minimalist artwork are in fact relied upon to the exclusion of things such as, oh I don't know, "originality," and "quality." As long as colors move about on the screen, and the production time is lightning-fast, it MUST be a prime choice for prime time, right? Bleh. "Danny Phantom" took the style of "Fairly Odd Parents" almost line-for-line, although at least that one had SOME character body motion. But enough ranting... I will admit that once in a while, "Fairly Odd Parents" can drag a chuckle, albeit kicking and screaming, from the depths of my torso. Also, I will gladly give props to the voice actors, whose dynamic voices are nothing short of a saving grace. But even the voices are only good in small doses. They're so scratchy and overblown that I would sooner snort broken glass than watch more than two episodes in close succession. The fact that this show won an Emmy, for character design of all things, is either totally surprising or not surprising at all; I can't decide which. And none of the writing seems to have any wit, edge, or depth. I reserve my one-star ratings for the truly despicable alone, and I do not despise this show. But I have absolutely no reason to recommend that you watch it. |

posted: Apr 03, 2008 Rated it: | World-Class Animation Critic | I really hate this retarded show, it SUCKS! big time, and personally I think it is insulting to fairy kind (if you believe in fairies that is); I mean the people who had come up with such crap 'ought to have their heads examine huh? and also there is a LOT of craziness (the evil school teacher, which I think is getting really old) and also stupidity (the boy's parents and fairy godfather) in this show - two of the things that I dispised and loathe in the WHOLE world (especially stupidity). Overall, I say that this show is so f*****' annoying and should not be seen by prying eyes at ALL (it would make'em bleed to death)! |

posted: Nov 25, 2007 Rated it: | newbie | It's not a great series but it's not bad either. Umm...it's interesting. Yeah...that's what it is... The show, when it's funny, is good for keeping me from rotting of boredom but most times it's what bores me. That made no sense but I'll leave it at that. |

posted: Nov 19, 2006 Rated it: | newbie | I really enjoy this cartoon! The characters and plotlines are very interesting! And the main message of the show is "Be careful what you wish for" and then also there are other little morals in almost every episode. And of course, it is very funny and also...suprisingly, it is pretty clever! But, then there are the Horrendous songs... except for "Shiny Teeth and Me". But, that doesn't stray me away from the series. They don't happen in every episode. So Sue me!! I really enjoy this show! It might not be the "boldest" show, but its still good. The plot is original and is just a fun series! 3 stars! |

posted: Jan 23, 2006 Rated it: | World-Class Animation Critic | It's hard to think of another cartoon series more deserving of the endorsement, "alright" (except maybe 'The Wild Thornberries', which screens back to back with it where I live). I agree with the review below. This show has traces of the greatness of the early Nick shows, but they're formularised, dumbed-down, second-hand and relatively uninspired traces. That's not to say it's a bad show. There are concepts and moments that still make me laugh, but overall, I'd have to file this under "who really cares?" It struck me while watching FOP that the early nick shows were for both adults and children, treating each a bit like the other, and the 21st century development in animated series is that adult stuff is branching off into purely adult areas like Adult Swim, and Nick has gone back to pretty much pure kid's stuff. Which is ok, but I've always believed the best cartoons are multilayered and can be appreciated by both audiences at once, like Rocko's Modern Life. This show won't do your kids any harm, but you probably won't want to watch it with them. It's not bad, it's not good. It just is (that Van Morrison song is stuck in my head. If anyone's curious, it's 'Summertime in England' from 'Common one') |

posted: Jan 09, 2006 Rated it: | World-Class Animation Critic | I don't what has happened to nick toons, they used to be very bold. Shows like "Ren and Stimpy" and "Rocko's Modern Life" were pretty much adult cartoons but tamed for younger audiences. Now, most of the cartoons on this network are strictly kid fare, nothing for older audiences to look at. "The Fairly Odd Parents" really isn't that bad nor that good. There is nothing for adults to laugh at and it's filled with poorly written dialogue and sight gags, but it isn't all bad.At times, the dialogue can be real funny and and makes a quality episode. The side characters aren't that funny at all, they're just little more then props in my opinion. The most annoying character on that show is definetly Cosmo, I just wish he whould shut the hell up or die.Overall, a decent series but not too much to speak of. |

posted: Apr 22, 2005 Rated it: | KF Animation Editor | Okay. What can I say but "Eh?" While Fairly Odd Parents has some funny moments, the humor only shines through at the risk of some hyperactive and truly nonsensical dialogue and situations. The "odd" in the title doesn't just describe the characters. It describes many of the situations in ALL of the episodes. Then, of course, there's a slightly sadistic side to this cartoon. Vicky, well, just creeps me out. I realize she's supposed to be a stereotype, but if she wasn't in the show it might have scored a three. Then again, if she wasn't in the show, there wouldn't be any point of Timmy having fairy godparents. Yet how any kid could let someone like her put himself through that much crud is beyond me. |
