This is a fun movie. The characters are appealing and the whole storyline is very amusing.

The animation is nice, although some of it is obviously reused at times. My favorite song in The Aristocats is 'Ev'rybody wants to be a Cat' (I like how it turns into a psychedelic lightshow at the end of the movie. The ending of Mulan reminds me a lot of it.)

Besides O'Malley and Duchess and her kittens, my favorite characters are Napoleon and Lafeyettethe two hounds, the geese sisters Abagail & Amelia, their lovable Uncle Waldo,Scat Cat and his band of fellow alley cats (including that anachronistic English hippy feline),Madame Adelaide and her lawyer Georges (who reminds me of Mr.Magoo). Edgar is a wonderful comic villain.

Although perhaps not in the same league as Disney classics like Snow White,Pinnochio,Fantasia and Beauty & The Beast,The Aristocats is an enjoyable romp.

Disney's low point.

When reading about the making of this film, the creators talk happily about how each character was conceived, and their personality carefully developed.

When WATCHING the film, it's evident that PLOT development took a back seat. There's next to no story here. But lots of well-developed, unnecessary characters.

In brief: an evil butler hears that his employer is going to leave her fortune to her cats. In hopes that he will be the new beneficiary, he dumps the cats in the countryside.

The cats then wander around meeting various characters.

After which they return home for revenge on the butler.

The plot is even more underdeveloped than in the Jungle Book, without that film's saving grace of excellent music. The 'Everybody Wants to Be a Cat' song is probably the film's one saving grace.

Don't buy it--rent. Better yet, get it from your library.

It seems like a strange thing to say but the story seems to lack... cohesion. The film is like a collection of scenes--some of them undeniably extremely charming and funny scenes--but scenes that don't quite stick together to create a good flow for the whole story. I couldn't "get into it," would be the only way to describe watching the movie. Still this is a movie which will likely keep the kids amused for a while.

The highlight of the Aristocats, and perhaps its best known feature, is the musical number "Everybody Wants to Be a Cat." There is a certain amount of authentic swinging-style that transfers well from the screen and makes one want to grin in spite of themselves. As one of the kittens put so eloquently, "It's not Beethoven, but it sure does bounces!" Unfortunately, the rest of the movie's songs don't measure up in comparison, coming across as pale shadows next to that energy-infused musical number.
