This 2000 live-action movie starring Rene Russo, Jason Alexander, Robert DeNiro and Piper Perabo was summed up perfectly when Bullwinkle responded to this comment from the narrator: "And 'Really Bad Television' was changed to 'Rocky and Bullwinkle Television'." To which Bullwinkle said "What's the difference?"

This classic cartoon from 1959 was one of the first cartoons on television. The characters were goofy for the kids but the storytelling was intelligent for the adults to enjoy, and it remains to be one of my favourite cartoons. However, this movie seemed to forget the intelligent storytelling and instead went for lame slapstick humour, awful performances from good actors and unnecessary cameos, all of which would of been fine for a '60s cartoon but do not hold up to modern movie expectations. However, the puns were great and that alone got me though the whole fiasco.

Having seen little if anything of the original cartoons, I can’t say I have much foreknowledge on them, other that what I’ve read and heard about. Having said that when I sat down to watch this in the cinema, I was probably the most knowledgeable of the history of these characters in the entire building; and certainly the one who had the most idea of what to expect.

Rather Bad verbal and visual puns are the order of the day here, so a love of these kinds of films is therefore a strong requirement. Since I’ve enjoyed films like Airplane, Hotshots, and not to mention the Naked Gun movies, I found myself quietly enjoying this; smiling at the wordplay and sheer insaneness of the whole.

Unfortunately, semi-clever writing and bad puns can’t help a film that fails on the dramatic level. There isn’t a great deal of real tension here, the whole movie is geared in the heroes favour, even when the villains are supposedly winning. The plot is, frankly, irrelevant, as it is with all movies of this type.

The life-action is a mixture of cheese and dreadfulness, some of it is enjoying (the cameos mostly), most falls flat; Robert de Niro is just imitating himself once again and it’s getting old. Then again Rocky and Bullwinkle themselves are fine, suiting this oddball world and its plot to a tee.

And that’s the thing, if you like these kind of movies, then this is a okay example of them. It's Not up to the three I’ve mentioned earlier, but neither is it near the worse end of the spectrum.

I didn't care for this one at all. I found most of the characters either annoying or boring. There wasn't much of a plot, that I can remember, it has been a while since I watched it.
The animation was ok so I'll give it half a star for that.
Avid fans of the Rocky and Bullwinkle cartoon might enjoy this but everyone else should avoid it.

I'm not going to get too in-depth.

I've seen worse movies. Bullwinkle and Rocky themselves act in character, and the feel of the movie is true to the spirit of the cartoon, in general.

But it could have been LOTS better. Having Boris and Natasha acted by real people was a terrible disappointment. And there's the usual cheesy romance going on between the live-action characters (which always seems to happen in these kind of films.) And nothing like a gripping plot.

But if you like Bullwinkle and Rocky, you shouldn't drop dead of nausea.
