KF Animation Editor | Computer animated shows have been struggling for years to match the magic of Reboot. Most have failed miserably. Storm Hawks is the least annoying that I've seen in quite a while. Someone mentioned the phrase "strato-punk" while reviewing the show Skyland. This is something along those lines. It certainly has potential to become something more, but as it stands, it's no deeper than the average Sailor Moon episode. Storm Hawks is an odd mix of Star Wars, the video game Skygunner, and fantasy. The Storm Hawks' machines resemble X-Wings and one episode features the main character and his friend racing in a canyon(Star Wars), but the technology has a retro mechanical feel(Skygunner), and magic comes in the form of crystals(fantasy). Weird. Unlike most computer animated shows, Storm Hawks features a style called cel shading, made popular by The Legend of Zelda. In this show, though, it looks creepy. Because all the main characters are teens, the show dips into cliches of how teenagers are supposed to act(i.e. they occasionally speak like surfer guys). The acting is occasionally lame, but you could do a lot worse than this show. I'll keep an eye on it to see how much it grows. |
