I really had to think for a while before deciding to write a review of this series, because it's not like I have the most vivid memory of it. I worked in a huge video store at night in the late 80's, and we had this thing in stock, along with the slightly more memorable 'Ewoks' (slightly more memorable because I remember feeling slightly more like throwing them out the back door while nobody was looking).
'Droids' came out in the mid 80's, when there were two basic rules for TV cartoons in North America.
a) Design a toy and then make a cartoon out of it (or make a toy out of a cartoon), or
b) Find a successful live action show and make a cartoon out of it.
Imagine the inevitability then of a cartoon series about a successful live action movie franchise which had already sold billions of toys.
Adults used to rent these things, and I used to think, "Wait - no! You've walked right by Pee-Wee Herman's Christmas Special' and 'Meatballs III: Summer Job'. Save these up for when you're desperate!"
Ok. Look, it's about what you'd expect it to be. A cheesily made (though certainly not excessively so, given the period) mid 80's cartoon, cashing in on Star Wars mania, which for some reason was still alive and well by then, despite the fact that most audiences didn't actually notice when theatres got the reels of 'Return of the Jedi' in the wrong order. I can't really be bothered trying to say anything profound about it, largely because I don't remember very much, except that it was pretty cheaply made, predictable, and that 'Ewoks' usually rented better. It wasn't utterly wretched, but that's not exactly a recommendation.
I'm giving it half a star because if you're a real Star Wars fanatic you'll probably find some merit in it, but for anyone else, I can't think of any reason to bother.
