I've now had a chance to rewatch the series, so I'm rewriting my review.
The Star Trek animated series was written by many of the writers from the original series, and voiced by many of the original actors. In only a few episodes does it sink to child-cartoon level. Though production values weren't high, the visuals were adequate and reasonably attractive. It is a cartoon that respects the intelligence of the viewer, and was probably ahead of its time in targetting a more mature audience.
On the other hand, I found a few of its scientific statements questionable (not that I'm any expert), and the soundtrack was repetitive. I'm not sure if they used some score music from the original series, or recycled the music for several series: all I know is that the 'danger scene' music seemed incredibly familiar, and the rinky-dink humor music they played whenever McCoy and Spock were arguing was irritating. One episode was written by Larry Niven, who shoehorned one of his Ringworld alien races into the story. I don't know if that's good or bad. If I liked Ringworld, maybe I wouldn't question it.:p
Any classic Star Trek fan should be able to watch this series without flinching. It makes me want to go back and watch the original program.
