The first Tom and Jerry cartoon (apart from Van Beuren human ones obviously) and it’s a good, but not amazing beginning for two soon to be legends. Jasper (Tom’s name in this short) is tormenting a mouse (Jerry sans name) by making the rodent run blindly toward his open mouth. He then proceeds to give the mouse concussion by painting a mouse hole in the skirting boards which the mouse desperately tries to enter.

Soon however Jasper has knocked over a vase and Mammy Two-Shoe is not happy, as it seems that this isn’t the first time this has happened. The lady gives the cat a warning, no more breakages or he is out. The mouse sees this as a great opportunity to get back at his tormentor and proceeds to gently nudge breakable items off of their shelves.

Slower than most Tom and Jerry cartoons (they picked up speed in time, esp. after Tex Avery arrival at MGM), it makes this up with some superb character animation that would paved the way for the future. Nonetheless it has the problems I’ve associated with debut shorts in that it’s nowhere near as good as the best examples of the characters it stars; the only difference is that Puss Gets the Boot is better than most.

I always wonder what was Tom & Jerry's first cartoon ever; and now I know, that it is this short, it is a great first appearance of the famous cat and mouse duo; though in this short they are known as Jasper & Jinks.

Mammy Two-Shoes always cracks me up (not to be racial and stereotypical here, so don't worry folks) with the "O-W-T - Out!" and I also love the squeaky prayers of Jerry/Jinks too (it is so cute). If anyone wonders which version of Tom & Jerry, that I love the most, it is Tom & Jerry from Hanna/Barbera (1940-1958); and from Looney Tunes animator Chuck Jones (1963-1967).

The Tom and Jerry cartoon series has had a surpisingly long and fruitful history, the reason why is because of the simple concept of the two characters. There is basically no story you can't put them, that's why they have lasted so long. The simpler the concept of the characters, the more you can do with them."Puss gets the boot" is a solid introduction to Tom and Jerry, nothing too remarkable but still enjoyable. There are some noticable differences in this early era of Tom and Jerry,Tom's name is Jasper and appears more like "cat like" and Jerry didn't even have a name.
