World-Class Animation Critic | This Soviet short had a lot of potential. It begins in very muted, sombre blues and blacks as a lone boy climbs the stairs of an apparently abandoned building, to his bedroom, where things become entirely black and white. He falls asleep and experiences a series of richly coloured, surrealstic dreams involving everything from six-eyed cats to jet-propelled elephants. As with the immensely superior 'Tale of Tales', the drawing style varies throughout the film, often looking more like a slapped-up oil painting than what we would normally consider cel animation. Unfortunately I can't say this film belongs on a DVD purporting to consist only of 'masters' of animation. It's whimsical and interesting and worth a look, but the very primitive animation and the failure to wring any real poignancy out of the subject matter ultimately lets it down. |
