See my review of 'The Gumby Show' to fill in the blanks here. I'm docking a few points here because the 80's segments of this new show, while good, weren't as hilarious, magical or plain mental as the old 50's and 60's bits, and if the whole show relied on the newer segments it would have become a bit mundane, I suspect.

The amalgamation of the old and new material was probably a bit clunky, but it really didn't matter. Each show was a surreal sort of experience, especially because of the old 50's clips.

I'm sure that the 80's version of this show was bigger with adults than kids. Though there's nothing here that would render it unsuitable for children, and they would probably love it, it's all just so plain weird that it had 'cult hit' written all over it.

To be honest, I don't remember the new characters such as the mammoth or the chicken, which probably shows that the old clips were what really stuck in my mind. I do remember the rock band, though I get that a bit confused since they were in the movie as well.

I could imagine getting burned out on Gumby, but in small doses it was great stuff. Very, very strange, perhaps most of all because I always had the feeling that its creators didn't actually realise how weird it was, and probably thought it was all good, clean, educational fun. Which it was. It just happened to be demented as well.
