Dayum...Gargoyles is not only a brilliant animated series, but a brilliant series, period.
Definitely the most unusual of Disney's cartoons, Gargoylges blends fantasy and history almost seamlessly, as every episode was carefully planned and researched.
The characters are complex, and fascinating; neither the heroes nor the villains are two-dimensional, and even secondary characters are highly developed.
If you were living under a rock in the mid-90s and missed it, the season 1 and season 2 vol. 1 DVDs are definitely worth watching. You will not be disappointed.
I very reluctantly take half a star off for frequent animation errors, however. It's a fantastic show, nonetheless.

I began watchng the series when it first came out, and i loved the mythical feeling it presented as a series through it's unique characters and out of place enviornment. though i never finished watching the entire series, loved what i saw, and wanted many answers for the ever popping questions that came throughout. i don't know the history behind it, so i'm not sure how original it is, but it seemed far different and downright 'cool' for a disney series, compared to their other mediocre stuff back in the day.

Few words could describe this great series, a rare diamond in the rough, many times you wonder whether you're watching a Disney Series, considering how awful the Channel has been lately.

Honestly, when I first watched this show, I was truly bored, spending my time wondering why don't I just go outside and play. Rain decided no, so I was stuck, wondering why didn't anyone grew a brain concerning Children's Television shows or something.

So, half asleep, I clicked onto the Disney Channel and voila the opening theme blared into my ears. It sounded very different, not upbeat or sweet-pop like most opening songs, I've heard recently, opening my eyes just slightly, I saw the title " GARGOYLES" glaring down on me.

Interest perked, I sat through and watched the episode, "The Gathering: Part One", my mind steadily drawn to the twists and plots of that one particular episode. Little did I know that that was only the icing of the cake. After twenty-two minutes, I was screaming, MORE!

The overrall theme of it was startling, gone were the traditional, pastel and glaring colours, enter dark and an almost gothic like setting. Since the main characters are as the title implied :Gargoyles, the atmosphere is 99% at night.

What are Gargoyles?

To sum it up, long ago, precisely 1000 years ago, humans and Gargoyles lived together, each of them form a sort of symbotic existence. The humans gain protection from these nocturnal creatures, who are vulnerable during the day because once the sun rises they are turned to stone while during this fragile state, the humans protected them.

But alas, it was in human nature to fear those who are different than them, and generalised them as monsters, avoiding them like a plague.

Due to honour, Goliath, the leader of the Wyvern Clan or Castle Wyvern, still continued their kind's tradition of guarding the castle from the invaders, the Vikings. That was until, one particular female Gargoyle, Goliath's Angel of the Night decided that the humans have severely mistreated, betraying both the humans and her own kin, she led to one of the mind-numbing and jaw-dropping plots ever in the history of Disney Television.

Frozen in stone by a magic spell, casted by a furious Magus, the gargoyles, or what's left of them soon found themselves transported from 992 AD to modern-day New York in 1992. Flabergasted and somewhat confused, they fell easily into a simple plot by the series main Antagonist, David Xanatos. David Xanatos is easily one of the more interesting characters in Gargoyles, being filthy rich and quite cunning (something which lacks in most cartoon villains, these days), he easily fooled me into believing that he was one of the good guys.

But with further investigations, I found out, like I have stated above, nothing was like what it seemed. The animation was quite smooth during the first two seasons, but as the series slowly moved on, I realised that the drawing grew somewhat tacky, as if the animators have decided to fall asleep and draw with their eyes closed.

A glaring evidence during the last season. The animation was so horrible, I almost clicked the 'Off' button, fortunately the storyline made me stay put.

In short (because my fingers hurt) Gargoyles is a must see. Whatever it is, if you want to see that Disney was not as bad as you thought they could be (okay, they are, they cancelled this show *grumbles*), just watch it.
