It was a sad day when the Muppet version of Fraggle Rock came to an end; it was a magical affair that oozed the excellence of a typically good Muppet show. It had good songs and an interesting ensemble of characters (especially good old Sprocket). Well maybe the humor was nowhere near as sophisticated in Fraggle Rock as it was in the original Muppet Show, but it was in all ways something you could lose yourself in, it felt alive.
What could replace such a big part of my television line up, why how about a animated version of Fraggle Rock, well in some ways it was a replacement, for one season anyways (the live-action version would return in the next), but it lacked the grittiness of the original; that lived in feel. And that was the main problem for me, how do you recreate that feeling?
Not that there was anything really wrong with the show, the animated versions of Gobo, Wembly etc were true to their origins; the animation is how you’d expect for the period it was made in, not amazing, just about competent. Yet in some respects the fact that it is just merely competent animation really makes you wish that you were watching the livelier muppet version instead.
