Ugh . . . clearly someone didn't watch the original "Ferngully" when they wrote this.
Ferngully 2 is a burning wastebasket of a film . . . seriously. The story is basic crap: Crysta, a magical tree fairy that we know and love from the first Ferngully, has been downgraded to watching over some baby animals in her care; within a few minutes of the film's beginning, they are stolen from her by poachers. Her other forest friends, Pips, the Beetle Boys, and Batty Koda, agree to fly to the nearest human town, hoping that they can save the forest creatures while Crysta and the others protect their home and pray that the young animals will be brought home safely. Meanwhile, Pips takes a liking to the human world when they find a carnival and a kind young girl named Budgie. Thanks to her, they find the animals and after a long, pointless round of obstacles, the animals are saved from being sent away to zoos and other exotic places.
In the end, the film is nowhere close to being as good as the original. Robin Williams, the voice of Batty in the original, is nowhere to be heard, as is mostly all of the main cast of fairies from the original Ferngully . . . wah. The art is okay, but it's not better than most of Disney's recent slew of DTV sequels (which is sad). The villains are total wusses, the songs are pointlessly awkward, and the reason why this film was even made is unknown.
My advice is to stick with the original film on this one. It's much better than this.
One star.
