The reaction that followed was so unbeleveable that i couldn`t bring myself to watch the rest of the film. If a bee started talking to you, i don`t think you would be `a bit suprised` and then have tea and cakes with it. Overall, the animation was good. |

posted: Jun 10, 2008 Rated it: | World-Class Animation Critic | Well, when I first watched trailers for "Bee Movie," I wasn't sure what to expect. I thought that most likely it was bound to be a story of a young bee that was seeing our world for the first time . . . And strangely enough, that was about it for the first minutes of the film. I agree with what most other reviewers have stated - Bee Movie is more like three different scenarios put together as one movie (Kinda a la' Cindy II, if you get my drift). I did enjoy the animation (which was classic Dreamworks style and quite realistic IMO) and the character design wasn't too bad for my taste, but the stupidity of the plot (the very multi-layered plot) made "Shrek the Third" seem better written than this (and of course, if you've seen Shrek3, you probably understand, right?). The ending was rather predictable (although there was at least one surprise that I didn't see coming), but still was bland and blah. Still, it's the animation quality and the voice cast (Jerry Seinfeld as a Bee? Who really would have thunk it?) that add an extra star of hope to this film. In conclusion, Pixar could probably make a better version of this same film (Just like what "A Bug's Life" did to "Antz" . . .). It's worth a rental, but probably not much else. I hope that you can tolerate lots of "bee"-puns while watching this. My Rating: 2 stars |

posted: Jun 07, 2008 Rated it: | World-Class Animation Critic | A friend recommended I see this movie and thank God I didn't pay to see it in the theater. This was one of the dumbest movies I think Dreamworks has spit out, I think the only one that I would rate worse...MAYBE is Shark Tale. The story was ridiculous, I couldn't really like any of the characters and the humor wasn't that funny. The animation was good and so was the voice acting but that's all this movie really has going for it. Don't waste your time on this one, watch Antz or a Bug's Life instead. |

posted: Dec 07, 2007 Rated it: | Toon Addict | After A Bugs Life, Antz, and last year's bomb The Ant Bully, ant movies had been pretty well mined. Ah, but there are plenty of other creepy crawlies out there that could carry a feature length film... or are there? The cleverest part of the slightly amusing Bee movie is its title. We join Barry Bee Benson trying to decide how to live his adult bee life. He ends up lost from the hive in a rainstorm, befriending a human. Eventually he learns that humans are exploiting bees for honey. He sues, courtroom drama style, and wins on behalf of all beedom. With a reclaimed mass of honey, the bees no longer need to work, and as a result all the pretty flowers die. But fear not, magical pollen obtained from a "float"-jacked Princess and the Pea Rose Parade float just might resuscitate all of the flowers to the accompaniment of a remix of the Beatles "Here Comes the Sun." Lost you?? Well if you couldn't tell, the story is kind of all over the place. And in the end, we realize its better to just go along with the way things have always been than to try and make a difference. The animation in this film was fantastic, especially during the aerial bee flight sequences. The colors are bright and fun, but the story just doesn't match the palette. Sadly, comedian Jerry Seinfeld just wasn't that funny, nor was the story very profound. So basically, this movie was a big ol waste of time. This seems to be Dreamworks new model, pretty movies that aren't funny and have pointless stories. Can't wait for Kung Fu Panda. Until then, Bee movie should be renamed C- movie.

posted: Dec 07, 2007 Rated it: | Mad Scribbler | Bee Movie is Dreamwork's latest offering. The movie has been hyped so much during the past year, the trailer seemed to play every time I went to the theater. How does it stack up? STORY: Our hero, Barry, discovers that humanity has been stealing bees' honey and decides to sue. The story isn't very good. It seems more like an excuse to string a bunch of individual gags together. The characters are forgettable. 0 Stars. ART: The art in the movie is top notch. Everything looks good. 1 Star. PERFORMANCE: The performance is OK, but not great. Seinfield should stick with TV sitcoms and stand-up routines. .5 Stars. SOUND/MUSIC: The sound quality is fine, but the music is totally forgettable. .5 Stars. OVERALL: After all the build up for the movie, it was really a let-down. Personally, I wouldn't watch it again, but there maybe some people who would enjoy it. |

posted: Nov 21, 2007 Rated it: | World-Class Animation Critic | I went into the theater to see Bee Movie with pretty low expectations. The trailers did not look good and the character designs did not look appealing. Unfortunately most of those expectations were met. I was hoping for something better but Bee Movie is a bland movie all around. While it isn't a bad movie per say it isn't a particularly good movie either. But, that did not surprise me since most of the Dreamworks animated films are that way. I just though that MAYBE, since Seinfeld wrote the movie, it would have some Seinfeld type humor in it. Let's start with the positives: There are a few funny moments and the animation is good. Very slick and fluid and it doesn't have the annoying "zip pop" pose to pose animation that Over the Hedge and Madagascar had. The human characters are big step up from stiff humans Over the Hedge and the Shrek movies. They weren't going for a "realistic" human approach and I liked that. Now, the negatives: Well, first of all, the movie just isn't very funny. It has a few humorous moments but as a whole the humor wasn't very funny. The character designs, especially on the bees, are bland looking and have sort of a plastic look to them. I've never been a fan of Dreamwork's character designs but at least these aren't downright ugly like the fish in Shark Tale. Conclusion: I am a fan of Jerry Seinfeld, I loved his sitcom and he's a great comedian. This movie, however, is a disappointment all It has potential, I'll give it that, but it has none of the wit or charm that Seinfeld had in his TV show. I'd say skip this one and rent Ratatouille instead. Or wait for the DVD and rent it. I give this film a 70 C-. |

posted: Nov 04, 2007 Rated it: | World-Class Animation Critic | This is a classic case of an animated movie getting hyped up because it has big-name live-action stars doing some of the voices, while a talented and accomplished voice actor like Patrick Warburton gets a supporting role and zero recognition in the ads. I do like Jerry Seinfeld...just not as a voice actor. At no point in this movie did I feel that his voice added anything to the scene. He just doesn't emote like a voice actor; I'm convinced he was even reading things like "Aaaaahhh" straight from the script, letter by letter. Honestly I'd say the only redeeming things Jerry had going for him were the occasional moments of genuinely funny dialogue that, it seems to me, were written by Jerry himself. Everything else was probably handed to him in a leaflet, and it shows. Renée Zellweger wasn't much better; worse, perhaps. Granted, her character didn't have as much screentime or as many dramatic moments as "Barry" Seinfeld, but something about her voice just seemed so aloof and unemotional. Plus her diction isn't the greatest for an animated role...maybe that's just my opinion. However I thought the performances of John Goodman and Chris Rock were pretty good. In other aspects: The animation was good--or at least the modelling was good. The interior of the bee hive was weird, but seemed to be appropriate in an almost Dr. Seuss kind of style. Also, the random beatle characters were hilarious. However, the humans' facial animations were unexpressive, and their bodies were a little TOO attractive. I'm talking about an entire city full of lean or muscle-bound men and extremely curvacious women. Kind of reminded me of The Incredibles, except that those were superheroes, so they could get away with it a little more easily. Finally, the story was lacking. I liked where it was going in the beginning, with the tried-and-true scenario of an individual seeking to break away from society's expectations. But at a certain point the plot became so ridiculous that it became hard to feel connected to the main characters' struggle anymore. Also, without going into specifics, some of the events that occurred would have to have enormous implications on the world as we know it, yet were treated very casually in the movie, relatively speaking. Meh...in spite of all that, the kids might get a kick out of this film. as it does have a healthy dose of simple silliness. But if you're keeping an eye out for quality animation, you might want to overlook this one. |
