Ridiculous. The main character itself it's a pastiche of Captain Marvel and Popeye trying to satirize Batman. Annoying. And ridiculous.

The plots are five minutes of boring stuff: someone needs help and Bananaman helps them with the help of his magical bananas.

Also, from the drawing to the animation (and obviously, passing through the plots) it's a good example of what you should NOT do in animation in general. Simple like that.

Run away from it.

I can’t and won’t defend this, because to me there is nothing defendable about this show. Based on the Dandy comics (from the same team who made the Beano) that I also found a source of tedium, I had little interest in this show when it was rerun during my youth and I have even less in it how.

Eric eats a banana and becomes a strong superhero, the central idea is obviously taken from either the Asterix or Popeye cartoons, though it seems to be taken from shorts like Super Rabbit, because the banana power running out was used a lot to try and add some drama to the bland plots. Bananaman is a complete idiot who wouldn’t and frequently didn’t have any real incline as to what was going on if not for the help of Crow, the only character in the whole show with any amount of intelligence.

Despite it faults it was, for some reason, popular here; most likely because it was a home grown cartoon series. The biggest thing is that as far as television series made in Britain go, this was just sandwiched between classic, limited budget, oddball stuff like the Clangers on one side and well made stuff like Count Duckula on the other. The adventures of a fruit based superhero, just don’t compare, heck at least SuperTed cartoon’s were passable if still terrible. This is just badly made, two-dimensional drivel.

England produced some great cartoons in the 80's. IMO, this wasn't one of them. Whereas 'Danger Mouse' was proudly British, this one was sort of cringingly English - which is no mean feat when two-thirds of The very talented 'Goodies' are heavily involved. Like the almost equally boring 'Super Ted' it's aimed at a younger audience than 'Danger Mouse' or 'Count Duckula', and I admit I'm approaching it from an adult perspective. It just had nothing for me - though I know adults who thought it was fun. It just had these sort of 'Cor', 'Beano', 'Whizzer and Chips' style to it (those are british comics BTW) that annoyed me (and which were hilariously parodied when Viz magazine came out, along with their adult videos like 'Roger Mellie the Man on the Tellie).

Popular in Australia but not a hit with me. I found it predictable and unfunny. Perhaps deserves better than this from me, but life isn't always fair. The kindest thing I could say about it was that it was very distinctively different than anything coming out of America.
