Balto, in my opinion, was one of the best animated movies I think I have ever seen. The fact that Universal managed to create a movie based on a true story is amazing. The plot is well thought out, and the character animations and voices are the best I've seen in a long time.
When Balto was first released, I did not bother going to watch it in the theater, because I thought that this genre of movie would not interest me. It was not until a recent time that I realized what I have been missing for all these years.
I inply that anyone at any age should watch this movie. It is a great movie and is worth watching with your family or by yourself.

This is one of the best films ever! The songs are well done, the animation is just great. The film's about a wolf-dog named Balto, who wants to be on a sled dogs team, the only thing that stands in his way is his differences and the villian Steele. The voice casting is well done, I strongly recommend it to everyone. It's well worth the money, so buy it, if not rent it.

If you are looking for the perfect family film, this is it!
Balto has a mix of everything that everyone will be sure to enjoy: drama, comedy, romance, and tons of action and adventure. The characters are just beautiful, both human and animal. The emotions of all the characters are so well personified to give each one its own wit and charm. The story, although based on the true story of Balto and the famous Serum run in 1925, was slightly altered by making Balto a mix between a husky and a wolf. Putting all other changes aside, the other aspects of the movie are completely dazzling. The animated backgrounds look so realistic (especially in the sequence when Balto's story begins), it's almost as if you were THERE in Alaska. The music was very calm and really helped set the heroic tone of the film, especially the ending song with the credits. All and all, wonderful film!
I have known about the movie since it was first released in theatres in 1995. Since then, I have remained as a loyal supporter and fan of Balto. His story, both real and animated, should not be missed! Absolutely a must-see! This is one of, if not the Best Non-Disney animated movies ever IMO.

I'm 20, and yet I've never heared of Balto before this year. But now I'm an absolute fan of this movie, and I've must seen it a few dozens of time now... Why? Outside of its classical aspects, this is simply a well done animated movie. To me, there's everything you need to make a great movie : great animation, attractive characters, a beautiful story, a good production... There's no dead time, no songs (except for the excellent credits one), and it's a really good thing. But above all, I love the soundtrack, composed by James Horner (= Titanic, Braveheart...) There are probably the most awesome themes I've ever heared in this kind of movies. And I'm sure everybody would have put it up amoung Disney's greatest movies, if it had been one! So if you've never seen it, give it a try!

I've seen Balto twice in other people's company. One at the cinema when it was released, and once a few years ago. Both times grown men in the audience cried, and during different scenes. And the scenes weren't even sad. On the contrary, they were just overwhelmingly powerful and cathartic in a positive way. I'l never forget the guy behind me in the cinema weeping at the power of the thing, and his kids presumably not getting it.

It's hard to overstate just how good this movie is. If 1982's 'Secret of NIMH' is the best American animated feature since the golden era of Disney in the early 40's, Balto is quite possibly the best since NIMH. It's exciting, emotional powerful, funny, has unforgettable characters. It's a wonderful story of courage and of redemption, and it has aged remarkably well - as the decision to make a sequel seven years later attests to.

Other people have reviewed the plot, so I won't re-hash that. I think 'Balto' is probably a perfect movie. And since traditional cel animation looks to be on its last legs, it may also be the last great traditionally animated film. It's a masterpiece which improves every time you see it. Tragically, it seems destined to become a footnote in animation history, when it deserves to be a headline.

Balto may just be the best film that was not made by Disney, and definitly up there competting with some of the Disney films. Losely based of a true story, Balto will easily touch your heart with it's tale of courage and love

This is one of my all time favorites. I'm not really sure why I like this movie so much. I saw it in theaters when it came out back in 1995 and my love for it has grown over the years. I think one of things the I liked the most was it's based on a true story, although the movie deviates from it greatly, it's the fact that there was an actual Balto that was intriguing.

All the main characters have depth to them. There are a few side characters there just for comic relief that don't, but unlike many comic relief characters these aren't annoying. The comedy is placed in the right spots and there aren’t really any awkward moments.

The animation in this film is spectacular. I haven't seen too many non-Disney movies that stood out like this one, especially for the time it was made. The characters' actions are smooth and the snowfall is great. Most places where cgi were used go unnoticed and blend nicely.

Unlike many Disney films this one doesn't have any doggies breaking out into song. There's only on song, but it's during the credits. The score was composed by James Horner and is amazing. I think it's one of the best soundtracks I have ever heard. You can feel the emotion of the characters through the music. The cast was excellent too. All were perfect for the role they had.

Overall this is one of the best-animated films I've seen. If you haven't seen this rent it. I don't think you'll be disappointed.

Balto is a great animated film, with only a few rough spots.

The main character is an outcast, a stray dog/wolf cross. His desire to be a sled dog is thwarted by the prejudices of the other dogs, and the drivers. And yet, the dog in him cayses him to fear and reject the wolves.

When an epidemic threatens the town--and a little girl Balto's love interest adores--Balto must come to the rescue of the lost dog team who are bringing the medicene. To succeed, Balto must learn to come to terms with both his dog and his wolf heritage.

The movie is beautifully animated, with many stunning scenes and clever touches. The main characters are...just...adorably drawn.

Character development is a bit sketchy--Balto is likeable and interesting, and plenty of humor is provided by Boris the cantankerous goose. The polar bears were fun...for a while...and provided a good laugh or two. Rosie was very enthusiastic and childlike. Jenna is the usual sweet-but-bland love interest character without a lot of personality of her own. And Steel, the villain, is a stereotypical cold-hard-bully character without an ounce of depth. And then there are a bunch of other secondary characters.

In fact, if Balto has a flaw, I'd say it is the overabundance of secondary characters and subplots-on-the-side which have little to do with the plot. the 'polar-bears-who-can't-swim' subplot might have been more compelling (and justified its existence more) if the bears' inability had had a significant impact on the plot BEFORE they dramatically overcame it.

But all in all, Balto is a joy to watch, and good fun for all ages.
