When you think of Nicktoons, you think of wacky, insane, and just plain oddly drawn cartoons and characters. Who knew Nickelodeon could produce one of the most sensible and awe-inspiring animated shows I've ever seen? Avatar: The Last Airbender is both dramatic and yet easily accessible to children, both intelligent and yet amusingly humorous. Considering it's yet another cartoon that deals with people who have control over the elements, it could've easily dipped into cliches. And yet somehow it does not. It has brilliant and deep characters and breath-taking fight scenes seemingly derived from real martial arts. Rather than being a Western cartoon trying to be like anime(which seems to be the norm), Avatar is more like a beautiful Chinese fairy tale with hints of the wuxia films. But in the end, it succeeds in being its own original thing. More cartoons should be like this one.
