Quite funny with good animation. Asterix is catapulted of the side of the world and finds himself in america!!!Unfortunately, it doesn't all go well because there is an evil personplotting to get rid of them... It is not at the top of my favourites list though it is still quite funny.

Another 5 year gap brought us this 1994 movie, the latest of the animated Asterix films so far. I'd like to say it was an improvement over the dismal 'Big Fight', and in some respects it is, but overall this is another one to avoid, and confirms my hunch that Asterix movies are now to be dumbed-down, though this perhaps doesn't suffer quite so badly from that flaw as the previous entry.

Based pretty loosely on 'Asterix and the Great Crossing', this movie sees Asterix and Obelix trying to rescue the Druid Getafix from the New World, after the Romans think they've catapaulted him off the edge of the world.

Once again we have a completely different sounding English voice cast. In 'Asterix in Britain, Asterix had a French accent. In 'The Big Fight' it was vaguely American. Now the gauls all sound completely British. Obelix is also badly mis-cast, with too high a voice. A minor plus is that the dialog between Asterix and Obelix (if you can handle that they sound like cockneys) is actually rather good. Also there are no horrid songs such as in the previous movie, the animation is probably the best looking of any of the films, and, as I said, the thing doesn't feel quite as dumbed down.

That's about where the plusses end, though. I was prepared to give this a better grade during the first half, but the second half drags badly. The portrayal of the Native Americans is rather embarrasingly incorrect and old-fashioned (though to be fair, I suppose it's no more a caricature than the portrayal of Britons, Spaniards, Goths, Numibians or any one else in the films). Still its rather conspicuously cringe-making.
'Big Fight' was a movie which, once it got over its poor start, was watchable. This one gets off to a reasonable start and then really loses its way. Overall I'd rate them about the same and suggest you avoid them both.

Traditionally there have been long gaps - 8 and 9 years at times - between Asterix movies. 'Asterix and the Vikings', currently in production, comes a full 12 years after this one. I hope the dumbing-down trend is reversed, but somehow I'm not hopeful.
For what it's worth, having watched all of the Asterix movies in order now, here's my revised ranking.

Very Good - Asterix in Britain
Good - Asterix Vs Caeser
Fair - Twelve Tasks of Asterix
Unless you're a big fan, I wouldn't bother with the others.
