The Buzz: February 2005
And the Oscar goes to...
I will fully admit that the only reason I sat through Oscar night tonight was to see what happened in the animation categories and I'm happy to say that both of my picks took home the golden statue. It is my pleasure to announce that The Incredibles won the Best Animated Feature Film category (it also took home Best Sound Editing) and Ryan won the Best Animated Short category. I'm going to take a purely patriotic moment and send out my sincerest congratulations to the Canadian short, Ryan. It was a much deserved win and I am so very proud.

Bugs gets an 'Extreme Makeover'
The WB has decided that Bugs Bunny and his friends just aren't 'hip' enough for the current generation and thus are redesigning the classic Warner characters for a new series called "Loonatics". The series will be set in the year 2772 and the new, much more angularly designed characters will be based on the old ones but have slightly different names (ie. Buzz Bunny--or something like that). Find out more in this article.

The Death of 2D at Disney: Dream On Silly Dreamer
In Minneapolis on Thursday (Feb.10), one day before Disney shareholders meet in that city for their annual general meeting, there will be three free public showings of a new documentary called "Dream On Silly Dreamer". Directed by former Disney animator, Dan Lund, the film chronicles the decline of 2D animation at the Disney studio through interviews with the animators who worked there. Surprisingly, the film is not being described as a Disney bash-fest but as the thoughtful, nostalgic ruminations of people who were absolutely devoted to their art. Check out FilmForce for a review of the film.

Incredibles Sweep the Annies
The Incredibles took top honours at this year's Annie Awards (considered the 'Oscars' of the animation industry). In addition to taking home the Best Animated Feature award, director Brad Bird won awards for writing, directing and his voice role as the Incredible's fashion designer, Edna Mode. Disney's short, Lorenzo won for Best Short Film, The Lion King 1½ won for Best Home Entertainment Production (aka 'direct-to-video' production) and SpongeBob SquarePants won for Best TV Production. You can find a complete list of winners on AWN.
