Toonerville Picnic
Toonerville Picnic © Van Beuren Corporation

The notoriously volatile Mr Bang is ordered by his doctor to take a trip for his health - specifically to relax. He catches the Toonerville Trolley to the seaside, accompanied by its driver, 'The Skipper', his enormous wife Katrinka, an annoying dog and various Toonerville citizens. Things don't turn out to be very relaxing for Mr Bang however, as he's already in a fuming rage by the time the trolley arrives, on account of the dog. He then has to contend with a deckchair which seems to have a life of its own, more irritation from the dog, and the rest of the party who are actually enjoying themselves - and finally a fight with a giant octopus.

Of Interest:

'Toonerville Folks' (often just known as 'Toonerville Trolley'), though little known outside the US, ran as a newspaper cartoon from 1908-1955, and was so popular that when the trolley which it was allegedly based on was replaced by a bus in 1940, it made nationwide news, and the strip was commemmorated as a postage stamp as late as 1995.

Its creator, Fontaine Fox gets the nod in a character of the same name in the comics of Mike Kazaleh (writer for Tiny Toons, animator on 'The Simpsons' and artist on the comic version of Ren and Stimpy)

Toonerville's characters were also the subject of a series of silent movies in the very early 20's.

The last cartoon Van Beuren studios ever produced.
