Taking a Russian lullaby as its motif, Tale of Tales is a dreamlike 30 minute film which uses a mixture of 2D and stop motion, to evoke the author's childhood memories, and more generally the themes of memory, lost youth, innocence and war.

Of Interest: Voted the best animated film of all time by a panel of animation historians at the 1984 Los Angeles Olympic Arts Festival. It won the same accolade at the 2002 Zagreb World Festival of Animated Films. Production was delayed or rejected several times by Soviet censors fearful that the movie contained hidden meanings. They also refused its original title 'There Will Come a Little Grey Wolf', and Norstein was forced to come up with a new title on the spur of the moment.
