Of Interest:

With the exception of Walter Koenig (Chekov), the entire cast of the 1966 live-action Star Trek series signed on to this animated version. When looking through the guest-voice roster however you'd think that no one else signed on--the virtually all the guest characters are voiced by either James Doohan (Scotty) and Nichelle Nichols (Uhura) with a few by Majel Barrett (Nurse Chapel) and George Takei (Sulu) thrown in for good measure.

As for the stories themselves, since this series was animated and not limited by a tiny special effects budget, there are many more strange aliens and some of them even had recurring roles--like the feline engineering officer, Lt. M'Ress.
