Sonic the Hedgehog: The Movie

Sonic and Tails are told to travel to the President’s house, where Robotnik tells them that Planet Freedom is in danger. Metal Robotnik has taken over Robotopia and has set the main reactor to self destruct. Only Sonic and Tails have the incredible speed necessary to get to and shut the system down in time. Boarding the Tornado, they set off to Robotopia; all the time fearing that the whole thing may be a trap. Indeed it turns out that Robotnik has used this ploy to collect the data he needed to complete his latest invention: Metal Sonic, faster and much more deadlier than the real thing. As Sonic and his robot doppelganger fight it out Tails and Knuckles try to figure out a way to stop this robotic assassin before it is too late.

This OAV was originally two Japanese television specials that were put together to create this ‘film’ version when it was ported to English language territories.

Contrary to widely held popular belief, Sonic’s home world in the videogames was never originally called Mobius, that name was solely an invention, probably by Sega of America. Since then the world of Sonic has been called Mobius by those in the west. In Japan the planet has always been referred to as the Earth (which some have read as a future or parallel version of ours).

In recent times Sega has, through the use of the Sonic Adventure videogames, the Sonic X TV series (which references the fact when Sonic notes that the stars look the same: at least in the English dub) and in this movie, where Sonic and Tails discover the ruins of what looks like New York. Sega have thus effectively retconned the name Mobius out of cannon. Some fans in the west still like to refer to Sonic’s world as Mobius (especially when concerning the original games), as well as the name of Dr. Robotnik for the villain.
