Taeko is a 27 year-old single woman from Tokyo. An office worker, she has always harboured a desire to travel to the countryside, and for the past two years has taken her vacation as a farm worker, living with a rural farming family. 'Only Yesterday' follows her second vacation, where she goes back to the countryside to pick safflower. Accompanying her is her 10 year-old self from 1966, portrayed in flashbacks. The film is effectively two stories melded together. As the story progresses, the adult Taeko is forced to decide what it is she wants from life.

At the time of writing, Disney own the US rights to 'Only Yesterday', but are reputedly shelving it because it is 'too mature' and has 'no market' - however the DVD is available in Japan (and probably other Asian countries), and has a definite European release and probable Australian release for 2006. Make sure that your DVD player is capable of playing DVDs from the regions currently available.
